International students who want to pursue further education in Malaysia will need a Malaysia Student Visa.

Any foreign national who wants to enter Malaysia needs to obtain a Pass pertaining to their purpose of travel. As such, the type of Pass you need to study in Malaysia is a Malaysia Student Pass.

The term Malaysia Student Visa and Malaysia Student Pass are often used interchangeably, and by all definitions, they mean pretty much the same thing.

This article will detail the process and requirements of obtaining a Malaysia Student Visa.

The Requirements for a Malaysia Student Visa

When you apply for a Malaysian Student Visa (ie. your Visa Approval Letter) to the Immigration Department, you must attach the following documents:

  • One picture of yourself, with 35mm x 45mm dimensions and a white background.

    • Issuance and expiry date. The passport must be valid for at least 12 more months.
    • All the previous visas you have obtained.

  • If you are from Iran: A Letter Of Eligibility (LOE), which your institution must apply for at the Iranian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

How to get a Malaysia Student Visa?

The process of getting a Malaysia student visa is divided into the following steps:

  1. Getting accepted into a Malaysian educational institution.
  2. Applying for a Visa Approval Letter (VAL).
  3. Applying for a Malaysian entry visa (if you are a Malaysian visa-subject national).
  4. Appearing at the immigration checkpoint in Malaysia (after you travel).
  5. Registering at your educational institution.
  6. Getting your Student Pass at the Malaysia Immigration Department.

How to apply for a Malaysian Student Visa Approval Letter (VAL)?

Once you are accepted into a Malaysian educational institution, you have two options of how to apply for a Visa Approval Letter:

  • You can apply yourself via the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) website, or
  • you can entrust the application to your university.

In order to apply, you must obtain all the required documents which prove that you meet the eligibility to receive a student visa for Malaysia. Then, you must create an account on the EMGS website.

Since the application is done online, you have to upload electronic copies of your documents.

You also have to pay a visa processing fee, which changes depending on the country, as well as a personal security bond.

If your visa is approved, you will receive the Visa Approval Letter (VAL) via email. You must print it and keep both the electronic and version printed version with you.

Malaysian Entry Visa for Foreign Students

After getting a Visa Approval Letter, certain nationals also need a visa to enter Malaysia.

The type of entry visa required for a Student Pass is a Visa With Reference, which means you must have authorization from the Malaysian Immigration Department (ie. the Visa Approval Letter (VAL)).

After you have registered and undergone the medical screening, you can request to get your Malaysia Student Pass and i-Kad.

Malaysia Student Pass and i-Kad

Once you have registered at your educational institution, you can request your Malaysia Student Pass at the Malaysia Immigration Department. The Student Pass is in the form of a sticker on your passport, endorsing your stay in Malaysia for the purpose of studying.

You can submit your passport at your school so they can arrange for you to receive your Student Pass.

What is the Malaysia Student Pass processing time?

Overall, the entire process from applying for a Malaysian Student Visa Approval Letter (VAL) to receiving your Student Pass takes 4-6 weeks.

The Visa Approval Letter processing time is 14 days. The Malaysian entry visa processing time is between one and three weeks (unless it’s an eVisa, which is processed within 2 days).

How long is a Malaysia Student Pass valid?

The validity of your Malaysia Student Pass depends on your course of study.

If you are enrolled in a language school, your Student Pass is issued for 6 months, but it can be renewed.

For most courses, you will receive a 1-year Student Pass, which you can renew accordingly.

For certain courses, you may receive a Student Pass which will remain valid for the entire duration of the course.

You cannot submit a request for Student Pass cancellation yourself.

You may be able to transit in a Malaysian airport and even enter the country without a Malaysia transit visa.

The Malaysian government issues the Malaysia Transit Without Visa Pass (Transit Pass) to nationals of certain visa-required countries provided that they meet a set of specific requirements.

Additionally, even if you are a visa-required national, you don’t need a transit visa for Malaysia if you don’t pass through immigration.

This article will detail the Malaysia transit visa requirements and the Malaysian Transit Pass.

Who needs a Malaysia Transit Visa?

You need a Malaysia transit visa if:

  • You are from a country whose nationals need a Malaysia visa, and
  • You will transit in Malaysia for more than 24 hours and/or
  • You have to pass through immigration to board another flight/get your luggage or you have to switch between terminals.
  • You are transiting in an airport other than Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

If you are a visa-required national, you do not need a Malaysia transit visa if:

  • You will transit in Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and
  • Your transit is shorter than 24 hours, and
  • You will arrive and depart through the same point (ie. you do not have to pass through immigration/switch between terminals KLIA and KLIA2), and
  • You will continue your journey on the same flight; or
  • You are eligible for the Malaysia Transit Pass (see below).

How to Get a Malaysia Transit Visa?

If you have to pass through immigration during your transit in Malaysia, it counts as if you are entering the country. As such, you will have to apply for a Malaysia transit visa the same way as a regular Malaysian visa – by one of the following two ways:

  • In person, at a Malasyian Representative Office Abroad (Embassy/Consulate) or an authorized Visa Application Center.
  • Online, for nationals of specific countries only.

Applying for a Malaysian Transit Visa in person

To apply online, you have to find the nearest Malaysian embassy or consulate and submit your application there.

The Malaysian visa application process is as follows:

  1. Visit the embassy/consulate’s website to learn about their opening hours.
  2. Download the Malaysia visa application form from the embassy/consulate’s website (if available) or the official website of the Immigration Department of Malaysia.
  3. Complete the application form.
  4. Gather the required documents.
  5. Pay the visa fee. Depending on the country, you may have to pay the fee beforehand by bank or you can pay in cash.
  6. Submit your passport, application form, and required documents in person.

The Malaysian visa processing time depends on the country, however, you should expect about a week waiting time, if not more.

If approved, your visa will be affixed to your passport and you must go and collect it.

Applying for a Malaysian Transit Visa online

Nationals of the following countries can apply for a Malaysian visa online:

  • China
  • India
  • Sri Lanka
  • Nepal
  • Myanmar
  • Bangladesh
  • Pakistan
  • Bhutan
  • Serbia
  • Montenegro

There are two types of online visas for Malaysia:

  • The Malaysia eVisa (available to all the above-mentioned nationals)
  • The Malaysia eNTRI (available only to Indian and Chinese nationals)

The online visa works like a regular visa but it is processed quicker and you can apply from your home. If approved, you will receive the visa in about two-three days electronically, and you will have to print it.

What to put down as accommodation in Malaysia if I am simply transiting?

One of the Malaysian visa requirements is proof of accommodation in Malaysia, such as a hotel reservation. However, if you are only transiting in an airport, it goes without saying that you won’t need accommodation in a hotel.

In this case, you could put the address of the airport as the address of accommodation in Malaysia, and explain you’re only going to transit.

If that is not accepted, you may have to book inexpensive accommodation.

What is the Malaysia Transit Pass?

The Malaysia Transit Pass is issued on the basis of the Transit Without Visa Facility. With a Malaysia Transit Pass, certain visa-required nationals can clear immigration and enter Malaysia for stays of up to 120 days even if they don’t have a transit visa.

However, whether you will receive a Transit Pass or not (even if you meet the eligibility requirements) is fully up to the immigration officers at the airport.

Who is eligible for the Malaysia Transit Pass?

There are two instances when visa-required foreign nationals can receive a Malaysia Transit Pass.

Instance 1

You are eligible for a Malaysia Transit Pass if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • You are from one of the following countries:
    • Bhutan
    • China
    • Myanmar
    • Nepal
    • Vietnam
  • You will arrive in Malaysia through Kuala Lumpur International Airport
  • You have an onward flight ticket within the 120 hours.
  • Your departing flight is either with Air Asia or Malaysia Airlines.

Instance 2

You are eligible for a Malaysia Transit Pass if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • You are from one of the following countries:
    • Bangladesh
    • India
    • Pakistan
    • Sri Lanka
  • You have a valid visa or residence permit issued by one of these countries:
    • Australia
    • China
    • Japan
    • New Zealand
    • South Korea
    • Taiwan
    • United States of America
  • You are arriving and/or departing from one of the above-mentioned countries.
  • You will arrive and depart from Kuala Lumpur International Airport or Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT).
  • You will arrive and depart from the same terminal airport and
  • You have an onward flight ticket within the 120 hours.

Requirements for the Malaysia Transit Pass

In order to receive a Malaysia Transit Pass, you will have to pass through immigration and present the following to the immigration officers:

  • Your passport, which is valid for at least another six months from the date of entry.
  • Original departing flight ticket. A photocopy or booking number won’t be accepted.
  • Printed copy of flight itinerary.
  • Valid visa or residence status from: Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, or the USA (if applicable).
  • You must be able to provide proof you can financially support yourself, for example, via bank statements.

Citizens of India and China can enter Malaysia and obtain a Malaysia Visa On Arrival (VOA), provided that they meet certain conditions.

Normally, the process of obtaining a Malaysian visa can be time-consuming and requires paperwork and documents to be submitted at a Malaysian Embassy or Consulate.

However, the Malaysia government simplified the process of obtaining a visa for several foreign nationals by implementing an online visa application facility.

Additionally, Indian and Chinese nationals have it even easier, with a Malaysian Visa On Arrival. However, a Visa on Arrival is not available in every case.

Malaysia Visa On Arrival for Indian and Chinese nationals

You can only get a Malaysian Visa on Arrival if you meet all of the following conditions:

  • You are an Indian or Chinese national.
  • You are traveling to Malaysia directly from Indonesia, Singapore or Thailand.
    • If you are traveling from India or China, you cannot receive a Visa on Arrival. You need a regular tourist visa or an eVisa/eNTRI.
  • You have a valid visa for Indonesia, Singapore or Thailand.
  • You have a return flight ticket or a ticket for onward travel dated in the next 7 days.
  • You have at least $1,000 with you.

Where Can I Apply for a Malaysian Visa on Arrival?

Additionally, you may only apply for a Malaysian Visa on Arrival if you arrive through the following points of entry.

By air:

  • Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA and KLIA2)
  • Bayan Lepas International Airport, Pulau Pinang
  • Sultan Ismail, Senai Airport, Johor
  • Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Sabah
  • Kuching International Airport, Sarawak

By land:

  • Tuas – Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (Second Link)

Documents required for a Malaysian Visa on Arrival

When you apply for a Malaysia Visa On Arrival, you must have the following documents proving your eligibility:

  • Your Indian or Chinese passport, which must be valid for at least another six months from that day.
  • A visa issued by Indonesia, Singapore or Thailand.
  • Proof of sufficient funds. You need at least $1,000 per person. You can have the money in cash or prove you have access to them via bank statements on an international bank account.
  • A return ticket to India or China or for onward travel to a third country. The flight must be within the next 7 days.
  • A completed Arrival/Departure Card, which you can receive at the Malaysian point of entry upon arrival.

How to get a Malaysian Visa On Arrival?

Once you arrive in the Malaysia point of entry, you must approach a visa counter, where you submit the documents below and pay a processing fee.

The Malaysian Visa On Arrival processing fee is $100.

The Malaysian authorities will then review your application and decide whether you are eligible to enter or not.

What is the Validity of the Malaysia Visa On Arrival?

If you receive a Malaysian Visa On Arrival, you can only stay in the country for a maximum of 7 days. This period is not extendable.

You will have to show proof that you intend to leave after 7 days, such as a booked flight ticket either to India/China or another country on your onward travels.

If you need to stay for longer than 7 days, you will have to apply for another type of visa, such as the Malaysia eVisa or eNTRI (see the alternatives to the Malaysia Visa On Arrival below).

Benefits and Limitations of the Malaysia Visa On Arrival

The Malaysia Visa on Arrival has a lot of benefits if, for example, you are on a holiday or a business trip which requires you to travel to Malaysia directly from Indonesia, Singapore or Thailand.

Benefits

As such, the benefits of a Malaysia Visa on Arrival are:

  • You don’t have to fill out any application form or visit a Malaysian Embassy or Consulate to submit the application.
  • It’s a much faster process since you do not have to wait days for your visa to be processed.
  • You don’t need to obtain extensive documents.

Limitations

On the other hand, it has its limitations, such as:

  • You cannot travel from your home country or any country other than Indonesia, Singapore or Thailand.
  • You can only stay for up to 7 days, which may not be enough if you’re traveling for a purpose other than tourism.
  • The Visa On Arrival processing fee is higher than for a regular visa.
  • You must be able to have access to $1,000 on hand.
  • You can only arrive at the entry points listed above.

The takeaway is this: If you have an Indonesian, Singaporean or Thai visa, don’t need to stay in Malaysia longer than 7 days, have the necessary funds and can afford the visa fee, then the Visa On Arrival is a good solution for you.

However, if you intend to stay longer, you will need an alternate visa. As an Indian or Chinese national, you still have two alternatives which are still faster and more straightforward than a regular visa, though not as much as the Visa on Arrival.

Alternatives to the Malaysia Visa On Arrival for Indian and Chinese Nationals

Indian and Chinese nationals are eligible to apply for a Malaysia Visa online through the following options:

  • A Malaysian eNTRI
  • A Malsysian eVisa

eNTRI

The Malaysia eNTRI stands for Electronic Travel Registration and Information. It is an online registration facility under the Visa Waiver Programme available to citizens of China and India exclusively. An eNTRI lets you stay in Malaysia for up to 15 days, but you can only receive an eNTRI after three months have passed since the last time you received one.

eNTRI holders can enter the country through all air entry points and several land entry points as well.

eVisa

The Malaysia eVisa is available to nationals of ten countries, India and China included. The eVisa works just like a regular Malaysia visa. The only difference is that you can apply for it online. It is valid for three months, and allows the holder to stay in Malaysia for up to 30 days.

Malaysia eVisa holders can enter the country through any entry point (sea, air, or land).

You can apply for a Malaysia visa online from any foreign country other than Singapore.

However, you’ll need to have additional documents and upload them electronically to the visa application facility. Online Malaysia visas can take a few days to be processed.

If your application is approved, you will receive an electronic version of the visa which you must print and present at the Immigration Officers at the point of entry.

A Malaysia Visa is granted to foreign nationals who wish to enter Malaysia, and who are citizens of visa-subject countries.

Malaysian Visas only allows the holder to travel to Malaysia, where they will be subject to border checks upon arrival. This means that a visa is not a complete guarantee that you can stay in Malaysia, for any purpose. It is the Immigration Officer at the entry point who decides whether you can enter Malaysia or not.

The Immigration Officer at the entry point will issue all foreign travelers a Pass. Malaysia Passes are an endorsement in your passport which states that you are allowed to stay in the country and for how long. Even if you are not required to obtain a Malaysian visa prior to travel, you will still receive a Pass on your passport and be subject to immigration check at the entry point.

As such, a Malaysia Visa is simply a pre-entry requirement – you will need the permission of the Immigration Officer to actually enter.

Do I Need to Get a Visa Before Going to Malaysia?

If you are from a country who is not exempt from Malaysia visas, then you will have to apply for one before you are allowed to travel there.

However, there are several countries who can stay in Malaysia for specific periods of time without having to get a visa. But for a period exceeding the duration of the allowed visa-free travel, you will have to apply for a visa.

For example, if you are a citizen of a member state of the European Union or from the USA, you don’t need to get a visa if you only intend to stay in Malaysia for a maximum of 90 days. But if you intend to stay for longer than 90 days, you do need to apply for a Malaysia visa, or the appropriate Pass related to your travel (work, study, family reunification etc).

When to Apply for a Malaysian Visa?

You can apply for a Malaysian visa up to 1 month before the date you intend to travel.

How to Apply for Malaysia visa?

There are two methods through which foreign nationals can apply for a Malaysia visa:

  • manually, or
  • online.

However, Malaysia only offers the online Malaysia visa application option to a handful of countries (see below). Most visa-subject nationals have to apply at a Malaysian Representative Office Abroad or through an authorized visa application agency.

Who can submit a Malaysian visa application online?

Malaysian authorities offer certain foreign nationals the option of applying for a visa online, through the Malaysia eVisa. If your Malaysia eVisa application is approved, you will receive it online and you have to print it – it won’t be affixed as a sticker on your passport.

You can only apply for a Malaysia visa online if you are a national of the following countries:

  • Bangladesh
  • Bhutan
  • China
  • India
  • Montenegro
  • Myanmar
  • Nepal
  • Pakistan
  • Serbia
  • Sri Lanka

Additionally, Indian and Chinese nationals are eligible for the eNTRI (Electronic Travel Registration and Information).

If you are a national of the above-mentioned countries, you can learn more about the Malaysia visa online application here.

Malaysia Visa Application Steps

To apply for a Malaysia visa, you need to go through these simple steps:

  1. Find a Malaysian Representative Office.
  2. Download the application form.
  3. Complete the documents file.
  4. Submit the application along with the documents.
  5. Wait for processing.

Find a Malaysian Representative Office

You will have to check to see whether there is a Malaysian Representative Office or a visa application center in your country or find the one nearest to you.

Download the application form

Before you submit a Malaysia visa application, you have to download Malaysia Visa application form from the website of the Immigration Department of Malaysia and complete it electronically. You’ll need access to a computer and Adobe Reader. After you complete the application form, you must print two copies and sign them.

Complete the documents file

When you submit a Malaysia visa application, you must have several supporting documents, such as:

  • Two copies of the Malaysia visa application form
  • Your original passport.
  • Two photocopies of your passport
  • Two passport size pictures.
  • A copy of your flight itinerary, including a confirmed return ticket.
  • Proof of accommodation in Malaysia, such as a hotel booking.
  • If you are staying with friends/family, include an invitation letter.
  • Bank statements from the past three months.
  • If you are applying for a Malaysia Visa with Reference: Original approval letter from the Immigration Department of Malaysia or another authority.

See a more detailed list of Malaysia visa requirements here.

Submit the application along with the documents

You have to submit the copies of the Malaysia visa application form along with your original passport and the required documents at the Malaysian Representative Office/visa application office. Depending on your country, you may be able to submit the application in person or by mail.

You have to affix a picture of yourself to the application form, which must be in line with Malaysia visa photo requirements.

There, you also have to pay the Malaysia visa application fee.

Wait for processing

Depending on your country and the location in which you are applying, you may be able to track the process of your application online.

If your Malaysia visa application is approved, you have to retrieve your passport with the affixed visa. Then, you are allowed to travel to Malaysia.

Keep in mind that even though you may receive a visa for Malaysia, once you travel there, it is the Immigration Officer at the port of entry who decides whether to allow you to enter. Depending on your purpose of travel, they will give you the adequate Pass which states the number of days you’re allowed to stay in Malaysia. For example, if you want to travel to Malaysia for tourism purposes, you will receive a “Short Term Social Visit Pass” (see a list of Malaysia Passes below).

Just because your visa is valid for 30 days, it does not mean your Pass will be issued for the same amount of days as well.

Malaysia Visa Application Processing Time

The processing time for a Malaysian visa depends on your country and the method through which you are applying, the time of year and whether you have all the required documentation.

  • If you are applying online (eVisa), the process should take no longer than 100 hours, ie. four days.
  • If you to apply through eNTRI, your visa should be processed within 48 to 72 hours.
  • If you are applying manually, the processing time depends on the office which is handling your application. Still, in most cases, the Malaysia visa is processed within 7-8 working days.

What is the difference between a Malaysian Visa and Pass?

A Malasyian Visa allows the holder to travel to Malaysia, whereas the Malaysia Pass indicates the purpose of the travel. Some Passes you receive at the port of entry upon arrival, while others, you have to receive before you can apply for a visa, such as an Employment Pass. As such, the Malaysia Passes are divided in the following:

  • Malaysia Transit Visas. You need to apply for a transit visa if you have to enter Malaysia in order to board another flight on your way to a third country.
  • Malaysia Tourist Visa. You will need to obtain a tourist visa for Malaysia if you plan on entering the country for tourism purposes and fall under the Malaysian visa regime.
  • Short Term Social Visit Pass, which you receive upon arrival to Malaysia. You will receive this Pass if you are traveling for a short-term purpose, such as visiting family/friends, tourism, business trip, attending a seminar, entering an exam, partaking in a sports competition, etc.
  • Employment Pass, which allows you to work in a Malaysian company/organisation. The Expatriate Committee (EC) or another Malaysian authority has to approve your position in the company before you can apply.
  • Dependant Pass, which is issued to the dependents of Employment Pass holders (spouses, children under 18, or elderly parents)
  • Visitor’s Pass (Temporary Employment). You have to apply for this pass before you travel if you have found an employer in Malaysia and want to take up work in an approved sector or as a Foreign Domestic Helper.
  • Visitor’s Pass (Professional). You must apply for this Pass if you want to offer professional services in Malaysia for a short period of time or to undergo training.
  • Long Term Social Visit Pass, which is issued to foreigners who want to stay in Malaysia for longer than six months and fulfill the requirements. However, you cannot work or become self-employed with this Pass. If you are the spouse/partner of a Malaysian citizen, you can receive this Pass for up to 5 years, which is why it is also known as the Spouse Visa for Malaysia.
  • Student Pass, also known as the Malaysia Student Visa. If you want to pursue studies in Malaysia, you have to apply for a Student Pass before you travel.
  • Residence Pass, which is issued to highly qualified foreigners who will work in Malaysia for up to 10 years. You can only apply for the Residence Pass if you have already worked in Malaysia for at least three years prior to application.

Additionally, Malaysian visas are also divided into Malaysia Visa Without Reference and Malaysia Visa With Reference.

What is the difference between a Malaysia Visa Without Reference and a Visa With Reference?

The difference between the Malaysian Visa Without Reference and the Visa With Reference depends on the purpose of travel.

The Malaysia Visa Without Reference is issued by the High Commission of Malaysia without requiring any prior authorization from a Malaysian authority body. This visa is issued for social visits or tourism purposes, and it is usually a single-entry visa.

The Malaysia Visa With Reference needs prior authorization from the Immigration Department of Malaysia before it can be issued. This is the type of visa you will receive if you want to travel to Malaysia to pursue further studies, join a family member, or work.

Can I Get a Visa on Arrival in Malaysia?

If you are a citizen of India or China, you are eligible for the Malaysia Visa On Arrival (valid for a maximum of 7 days) if you meet the following requirements:

  • You are traveling directly from Indonesia, Singapore or Thailand, and
  • You have a valid visa from one of those countries, and
  • You have at least USD 1000 per person and a return flight ticket.

How Many Times Can I Enter Malaysia With a Visa?

Depending on the number of entries, the Malaysian government issues these types of visas:

  • Malaysia Single Entry Visa, which is valid for a maximum of three months from the issue date and allows the holder to only travel to Malaysia once. This type of visa is usually for social visit/tourism purposes.
  • Malaysia Multiple Entry Visa, which can be valid anywhere from three to twelve months from the date it is issued. As the name suggests, the holder can enter Malaysia multiple times while the visa is valid. This type of Malaysia visa is usually issued for government or business purposes. However, you cannot stay longer than 30 days on any entry.

How to Extend a Single Entry Visa in Malaysia?

A single entry visa for Malaysia is only valid for up to 30 days and it cannot be extended. Neither can a Social Visit Pass.

If you want to stay in Malaysia for longer than your Pass is issued for, you have to leave the country and apply for the appropriate Malaysian Visa/Pass.

However, an extension of a Social Visit Pass may be possible in extraordinary cases, and only after consideration on a case to case basis. For example, you could receive an extension for your Social Visit Pass if you fell ill, had an accident, or if a situation in your home country (such as a war) could endanger you if you returned.

In such an event, you will have to provide evidence of your claim and show a confirmed return ticket to your home country.

Since 2017, citizens of certain countries have been able to apply for a Malaysia visa online.

Malaysia currently has two online visa application systems: Electronic Visa (Malaysia eVisa) and Electronic Travel Registration and Information (Malaysia eNTRI visa).

What Types of Malaysian Visas are Eligible for Online Application?

You can only apply for a Malaysian visa online if you are travelling for tourism purposes.

For any other purposes, such as for business, you will have to apply in person at the nearest Malaysian Mission Abroad (Embassy/Consulate/High Commission) or through an authorized Visa Application Center.

Who is Eligible to Apply for a Malaysia eVisa?

  • China

Moreover, you can apply for an eVisa from anywhere in the world (except Malaysia and Singapore), so you can apply for the Malaysian eVisa even if you are not currently living in your country of nationality.

What Documents Do I Need to Collect for a Malaysia e-Visa?

Since the application is done online, you will need to have access to a scanner so you can scan the required documents and upload them. The documents you will need when applying for a Malaysian e Visa are:

Once you have completed your application, your Malaysia eVisa will be processed within 48 hours, provided that they fall on working days, not weekends or public holidays.

Additionally, if there are any problems on the online application system, such as crashes or maintenance, the processing time for the Malaysia eVisa may be delayed.

How Many Malaysia eVisa Applications Can I Submit With One Account?

If you are applying for your children/other dependents, you can only submit up to five applications at any one time.

If you need to apply for more, then you can do so only after one of the previous applications have been processed.

Receiving the Malaysia eVisa

If your Malaysian eVisa is approved, you will receive it via email. Then, you can print it on an A4 page and bring it with you when you travel to Malaysia.

The Immigration Officers will also accept the digital version of the visa (such as on your phone or laptop) when you arrive at the Malaysian port of entry. However, it is still advisable to have a printed version as well.

How Long is the Malaysia eVisa Valid For?

An eVisa for Malaysia is valid for three months, and allows the holder to stay in the country only up to 30 days within this time frame.

If you are an Indian national, you can apply for either a Multiple Entry Visa or a Single Entry Visa. The eVisa is still valid for three months and you cannot stay longer than 30 days in any trip.

If you are from any of the other countries eligible for the Malaysian eVisa, you are only allowed to apply for a Single Entry Visa and stay up to 30 days.

In either case, it is not possible to extend a Malaysian eVisa.

How Can I Enter Malaysia if I am an eVisa Holder?

If you have a Malaysian eVisa, you can enter the country through any entry point (sea, air, or land).

Who is Eligible for a Malaysia eNTRI Visa?

eNTRI, which stands for Electronic Travel Registration and Information, is an online registration facility available only to nationals of China and India.

The eNTRI Malaysia works under the Visa Waiver Programme, making it easier for passport-holders of those two countries to enter Malaysia.

Please note that only mainland Chinese nationals are eligible for the Malaysia eNTRI – Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are excluded.

Additionally, you can apply for the eNTRI from anywhere in the world (except Singapore and Malaysia), therefore you are eligible even if you are an expatriate.

How to Apply for a Malaysia eNTRI Visa?

To obtain an eNTRI visa for Malaysia, you should follow these steps:

Print the eNTRI Note

After you register, you must print the eNTRI Note which serves like a visa, allowing you to travel to Malaysia.

However, unlike with the Malaysian eVisa, you cannot apply for an eNTRI at any time you want. You must wait at least three months from the last time you entered Malaysia with an eNTRI before you can apply for another one.

If you want to stay for longer than 15 days, you will have to apply for a Malaysian eVISA as described above.

Will I be Allowed to Enter Malaysia With a Malaysian Online Visa?

No, the online visa serves like any other visa in regards to the fact that it does not guarantee entry to Malaysia.

It only allows the holder to travel to Malaysia, where they will present themselves at the Immigration Officers at the point of entry.

The Immigration Officer then decides whether you are eligible to enter the country or not – if you are granted permission, you will receive a Stamp on your passport which states the number of days you are allowed to stay.

What Will You Need After You Arrive in Malaysia?

Once you arrive in Malaysia, you must go through border control at the point of entry, where you must present the following documents to the Immigration Officers:

  • Your eVisa/eNTRi printout.
  • Your boarding pass.
  • Your valid passport.
  • Proof of accommodation, such as hotel booking.
  • A booked return flight ticket.
  • Sufficient funds to cover the duration of your stay

Malaysia has very specific requirements when it comes to who they allow to enter the country, and for how long. Some foreign nationals can visit Malaysia for short-term periods without having to obtain a visa, whereas others are required to apply for a Malaysia tourist visa before they can travel there.

Additionally, a Malaysia tourist visa is not all the permission you need to actually enter the country. You will also need a Short Term Social Visit Pass, which an Immigration Officer will grant you at the Malaysian point of entry.

This article will detail the Malaysia tourist visa: what it is, who needs it, and how to apply for one.

What is a Malaysia Tourist Visa?

A Malaysia tourist visa is:

  • Single Entry Visa, which means you can only use it to enter the country once. Multiple-entry visas, which have a longer validity, are not usually issued for tourism purposes.
  • Visa Without Reference, which means you don’t need to receive permission from the Immigration Department of Malaysia to receive it. It is the Malasyian Representative Office Abroad (Embassy/Consulate) in which you apply who issues it.
  • pre-entry requirement into the country, which means it only allows you to travel to Malaysia. It does not guarantee that you will actually enter Malaysia.

The decision on whether or not you can enter Malaysia or not is up to an Immigration Officer at the point of entry where you arrive. Immigration Officers decide on whether a foreign national is fit to enter Malaysia, regardless of whether they need a visa and their purpose of travel.

If they decide that you are fit to enter, you will receive a Pass (ie. a stamp on your passport), depending on why you want to enter. For tourism, the type of Malaysia Pass you receive is a Short Term Social Visit Pass.

Who Needs a Malaysia Tourist Visa?

You only need to apply for a Malaysian tourist visa if you are from one of the following countries:

Nationals of other countries do not have to apply for a visa if they are only entering Malaysia for a short period of time and for tourism purposes. Some countries can stay in Malaysia without a visa for longer than others.

How to Apply for a Malaysia Tourist Visa?

Depending on your nationality, there are two ways through which you can apply for a Malaysian tourist visa:

  • In person, at a Malasyian Representative Office Abroad (Embassy/Consulate) or an authorized Visa Application Center.
  • Online, for nationals of specific countries only.

Applying for a Malaysia tourist visa in person

To apply for a Malaysian tourist visa, you should go through these steps:

  1. Find out where to apply.
  2. Download the Malaysian tourist visa application form.
  3. Collect the required documents for a tourist visa to Malaysia.
  4. Submit the application to the embassy/consulate.
  5. Wait for processing.

Find out where to apply

To apply in person, you must first find the nearest Malaysian Embassy or Consulate to you, or a Visa Application Center which can submit the application on your behalf.

Download the Malaysian tourist visa application form

Next, download the Malaysian Visa application form from the website of the Immigration Department of Malaysia. You must complete it electronically (you need access to a computer and an Adobe Reader or equivalent) and print two copies, which you must sign.

Collect the required documents for a tourist visa to Malaysia

Every Malaysian Embassy/consulate has different requirements regarding the documents you must submit. However, the required documents for a Malaysian tourist visa are the following:

  • Two copies of the completed Malaysia Visa Application Form.
  • Your passport, which is valid for at least another six months from the date you intent to enter Malaysia.
  • Two passport-size pictures of yourself which are in line with Malaysia photo requirements. Make sure to follow the picture guidelines as per their requirements because even an incorrect picture format could cost you your visa.
  • A complete flight itinerary, which includes a return flight ticket.
  • Proof of accommodation in Malaysia, such as a hotel booking.
  • Letter of invitation from your host/sponsor in Malaysia (if you have one). If you’ll be staying with them, they must confirm this in the letter and it will count as proof of accommodation.
  • No Objection Letter from your employer or educational institution.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the duration of your stay.
  • Proof of paid Malaysian visa fee. Some Embassies/Consulates require the fee to be paid in cash, while others will only accept payments made through a bank transaction.
  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate if you are from a country who is in the risk of Yellow Fever transmission or recently traveled/transited there for longer than 12 hours.

Submit the application to the embassy/consulate

After collecting the required documents, you should submit them, along with the application form, to the Malaysian Embassy/Consulate. You will also have to leave your passport, since if your application is approved, the visa officers will affix your visa to it.

Wait for processing

The Malaysian tourist visa processing time depends on the specific Embassy/Consulate. It usually takes about a week, on average.

If your application is approved, you must collect your passport with the visa on it, which allows you to travel to Malaysia.

Applying for a Malaysia tourist visa online

You can apply for a Malaysia tourist visa online only if you are from one of the following countries:

  • China
  • India
  • Sri Lanka
  • Nepal
  • Myanmar
  • Bangladesh
  • Pakistan
  • Bhutan
  • Serbia
  • Montenegro

Malaysia has two online visa application facilities which allow nationals from the countries above to receive their Malaysia visa faster:

  • Malaysia eVisa (Electronic Visa), which is valid for three months and allows the holder to stay in Malaysia for a maximum of 30 days.
  • Malaysia eNTRI (Electronic Travel Registration and Information), which is only available for Chinese and Indian nationals. An eNRTI allows the holder to stay in Malaysia for up to 15 days.

If you are eligible to apply for a Malaysia tourist visa online, you will receive a printable visa, which you must show to the Immigration Officers upon arrival to the Malaysian point of entry.

Learn more about the Malaysian Online Visa here.

After Arriving at the Malaysian Port of Entry

After you arrive in Malaysia, you must go through border control, where the Immigration Officers decide whether to grant you entry. You must show them the following documents:

  • Your passport and visa.
  • Your return flight ticket.
  • Proof you have sufficient funds.
  • Your completed Arrival/Departure Card, which you can get after arriving at the point of entry.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (if applicable)
  • Letter of invitation from host (if applicable).

If you are allowed to enter, you will receive a Short Term Social Visit Pass. Every foreign national who enters Malaysia must have a Pass, regardless of whether or not they need a visa.

The Pass indicates the number of days you are allowed to stay. You must not overstay your Pass under any circumstances.

How Long is a Malaysia Tourist Visa Valid?

A Malaysian tourist visa (eVisa included) is valid for a maximum of 3 months and for a single entry. However, you can only stay in Malaysia for a maximum of 30 days. It is the immigration Officer at the Malaysian point of entry who decides how long you can stay.

An eNTRI visa is only valid for 15 days, and you cannot apply for another eNTRI unless three months have passed since your current one.

You cannot extend a Malaysian tourist visa. If you need to stay in Malaysia longer, you can apply for a multiple entry visa, which is issued for business and governmental purposes.

Malaysia Tourist Visa On Arrival

If you are an Indian or Chinese national, you can get a Malaysian Visa On Arrival at the point of entry, provided that you meet the following conditions:

  • You’re coming directly from Indonesia, Singapore or Thailand and
  • You hold a valid visa for one of those countries, and
  • You have a return/onward flight ticket dated within the next 7 days, and
  • You have at least USD 1000 per person.
