A Taiwan (Republic of China- ROC) eVisa is an official entry permit that you can get digitally without applying in person for a visa at a Taiwanese foreign mission. Remember that eVisas are issued for short-term stays such as Taiwan visitor visas, business visas, or tourist visas. The biggest advantage of an eVisa is that you can get it quickly at a low cost compared to a paper-based visa, but not everyone is eligible for an electronic permit.

Can I Apply for a Taiwan eVisa if My Country Is Not on the Eligible List?

Yes, you can still  apply for a Taiwan eVisa if you meet the following criteria: 

  • Taiwan invites you to attend an international conference, a sporting event, trade fairs or other organized events sponsored by the ROC (excluding Chinese citizens). 
  • You are a part of a tourist group under the “Project for Simplifying Visa Regulations for High-end Group Tourists from South East Asian Countries” organized by one of the following countries:
    • India 
    • Indonesia 
    • Vietnam 
    • Myanmar
    • Cambodia 
    • Laos 
  • You are travelling to ROC to do business with the recommendation of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, and you are from one of the following countries:
    • India 
    • Sri Lanka
    • Bangladesh 
    • Nepal 
    • Bhutan
    • Pakistan  
    • Iran 

Taiwan eVisa Requirements 

You usually need to have only a valid passport when you submit your eVisa application for Taiwan; your passport has to be valid for at least six months when you apply. 

However, depending on your purpose of travel and your nationality, a ROC mission overseas may ask you to submit additional documents- make sure you submit the required documents at the specified timeframe or your application will be rejected.

Taiwan eVisa Application Process

You can apply for a Taiwan eVisa by following the instructions listed below: 

  1. Open a personal email account. 
  2. Go to the official website of a ROC mission in your country. 
  3. Fill in the online application form. 
  4. Pay the application fee.
  5. Print out the visa. 

Open an Email Account

If you don’t have an active email account, then you have to open one since you will receive all communications from the visa website in your email. However, if you do have an account, there is no need to open a new one as long as it’s active and you can access it with no issues. 

Go to the Offical Website of an Official ROC Mission in Your Country 

If you are from an eligible country for a Taiwan eVisa, then you can find the eVisa application link on the official website of a Taiwan mission in your country. If you are not from an eligible country, but you still meet the criteria for an eVisa, you can find the eVisa application form here.  

Fill In the Online Application Form 

Once you find the online application, you can start filling out the required information. First, make sure you select the correct visa (visitor, tourist, business, etc.), and then you can continue with the application. 

It’s essential to keep in mind that you must submit the same information that is in your travel document; if any details do not match, your application will be rejected. So, write your name and personal data precisely as it is your passport. 

Pay the Application Fee 

You have to pay the visa fee online before your application is processed. After you fill out your application, there will be a section for the payment; the ROC accepts only payment by credit card (Visa/MasterCard/ JCB), no other payment method is accepted. However, someone else can pay for your visa on your behalf. 

Print Out the Visa 

When your eVisa is approved, the visa system of the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) will send you an email with a link containing your eVisa. Download the eVisa and take the printout with you since you must present it at border patrol when you enter Taiwan.

Taiwan eVisa Cost

A Taiwan eVisa costs $57.68, but together with the processing fee of $1.60, the full payment is $59.28. However, if you are from the following countries, you do not have to pay an application fee for the eVisa: 

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Colombia 
  • Kiribati 
  • Kosovo 
  • Mauritius 
  • Montenegro 
  • Panama 
  • Peru 
  • Solomon Islands 
  • Turkey

Please keep in mind that the visa fee is non-refundable if your visa is rejected. Even if you do not use your visa after paying the application fee, the payment is still non-refundable. 

When Should I Apply for My Taiwan eVisa?

The ROC recommends that you apply for your electronic visa at least 7 days before you plan on travelling to Taiwan. 

How Long Is a Taiwan eVisa Valid For?

An electronic visa issued by Taiwan is valid for 30 days in three months. Therefore, you have 3 months from the issuance date to enter the country and use your visa. 

Can I Extend a Taiwan eVisa?

No, you cannot extend your Taiwan eVisa, this permit is issued for 30 days only and with a single entry- after your visa expires, if you want,  you can re-apply for another one. 

Can I Apply With Family Members?

No, you cannot submit a joint application with your family members. Every person who is accompanying you to Taiwan has to apply separately for their eVisa. 

Can I Apply for a Taiwan eVisa From the Philippines? 

Yes, you can still apply for an eVisa to Taiwan if you are from the Philippines. However, this agreement is valid up toJul 31, 2021; since its first trial year, the ROC has extended this option, and it may choose to remove the eVisa category for Filipinos in the future.

In recent years, the Taiwan government has introduced a new visa for foreign entrepreneurs in an effort to bring more investment in the country. The Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa is an attractive option for foreign investors for several reasons, such as:

  • It allows them one year to set up a business after arriving in Taiwan, meaning you don’t have to set up the business beforehand.
  • You will receive an initial 1-year residency with multiple entries.
  • If your business is successful, you may extend your Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa.
  • Up to three team members can apply together.

However, in order to receive an Entrepreneur Visa for Taiwan (officially known as the Republic of China (ROC)), you and your team members, if any, must fulfill certain eligibility criteria.

Who is eligible for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa?

You may only apply for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa if you comply with one of the following requirements:

  • You have received venture capital investment or international fundraising that amounts to over NT$2 million.
  • You have gotten patent rights or a professional skills certificate.
  • You have been approved to reside in an incubator or recognized innovation park in Taiwan.
  • You have been awarded in a leading startup or design competition or you took part in a foreigner entrepreneurship project.
  • You are (or previously were) located in a startup accelerator recognized by Taiwan.
  • Your company or the person who is the head of your company has been awarded or nominated in a film festival.
  • You have received a government innovation subsidy of at least NT$3 million from the central government or NT$1 million from the local government.
  • You have set up an enterprise with innovation capability in Taiwan and are acting as its legal representative, manager or director with an investment of at least NT$1 million.
  • You possess the innovation capability as specified by the Taiwanese government.

Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa requirements

When you submit a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa application, you must have several supporting documents, such as:

  • Completed Entrepreneur Visa Application Form, printed and signed.
  • Two passport-size pictures, taken within the past six months. They must have a white background without any patterns. Dimensions must be 35mm by 45mm without a border.
  • Your passport, valid for at least another six months and with at least three blank pages where the visa can be affixed.
  • If you have received venture capital investment or international fundraising:
    • Investment commitment letter, or any other proof of investment, signed by you and the relevant venture capital firm
    • Registration documents of the venture capital firm, or any other documents proving the legality of such enterprise
    • Documents proving you have received the investment
  • If you have patent rights or a professional skills certificate:
    • The patent certificate issued by the relevant Taiwan agency or an overseas agency
  • If you are approved to reside in an incubator or recognized innovation park in Taiwan:
    • Proof of the collaboration agreement, signed by both involved parties
  • If you were awarded in a leading startup or design competition or you took part in a foreigner entrepreneurship project:
    • Proof of the award certificate you received from the relevant agency
  • If you set up an enterprise with an investment of at least NT$1 million:
    • The company’s registration documents and relevant permit
    • An investment authorization letter along with proof of the amount of investment.
  • If you have been awarded or nominated in a film festival:
    • Proof of the Award of Excellence certificate
  • Any other documents that are requested of you, related to your business or otherwise.

Keep in mind:

This is not an exhaustive list of requirements as the specific documents are to be decided on a case-to-case basis, depending on the nature of your startup. The Taiwan government has the right to request any other additional documents as they see fit.

How to Apply for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa?

There are two possible application methods for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa, depending on where you are:

  • Abroad, at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission
  • In Taiwan, at the Bureau of Consular Affairs or any of its offices

Applying from abroad

If you are currently abroad, you may submit the Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa application at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission, such as an embassy or consulate. The application process is as follows:

  1. Complete the online Taiwan Visa Application Form (here). Print it and sign it.
  2. Collect the required documents.
  3. Submit the documents and application form at the Taiwanese diplomatic mission.
  4. The mission’s staff will forward the application to the Taiwan Investment Commission to be reviewed.
  5. The Investment Commission informs the diplomatic mission staff of the decision.
  6. If positive, the Taiwanese diplomatic mission will issue your Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa.
  7. Upon arrival in Taiwan, you have 15 days to apply for a residence permit at the National Immigration Agency.

Applying in Taiwan

If you have already entered Taiwan on a Visitor Visa may apply to turn it into a Resident Visa (Entrepreneur) from the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) or any of its offices 45 days before your current visa expires. The application process is as follows:

  • Complete the online Taiwan Visa Application Form (here). Print it and sign it.
  • Collect the required documents
  • Submit the documents and application form at the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) or any of its offices.
  • The BOCA will forward your application to the Investment Commission.
  • The Investment Commission notifies the BOCA of their decision.
  • If the decision is positive, the BOCA gives you your Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa.
  • Within 15 days of receiving your visa, you have to apply for a residence permit at the National Immigration Agency.

Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa applications from Hong Kong and Macao residents

If you are a national of Hong Kong or Macao, you may apply for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa in one of the two following ways:

  • Inside Taiwan, through the National Immigration Agency
  • From abroad, through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong or Macao

Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa processing time

If you are applying from inside Taiwan, the Entrepreneur Visa is typically processed within 2-3 weeks from the time you submit all the relevant documents. However, because applications that are submitted abroad still have to be forwarded to Taiwan for approval, the processing time for Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa applications submitted through a diplomatic mission will be longer.

Residence Permit for Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa

Although you need a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa to be allowed to start your business in Taiwan, if you want to be allowed to live in the country for longer than three months, you have to get a residence permit.

The Taiwanese residence permit is called the Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) and you have to apply for it at a local service center of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency.

What is the duration of a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa?

The first time you receive an Entrepreneur Visa for Taiwan, you will receive an Alien Resident Certificate with 1 years’ duration. After that first year is up, in which you have to set up your business, you may apply to extend your ARC, provided that you meet the extension criteria.

Extending a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa

After the initial first year is up, you can renew your Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa (technically, your Alien Resident Certificate) for another two times, each for a maximum of two years’ validity.

You may apply for an extension of your Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa if you fulfill one of the following conditions:

  • In the previous year, your business amassed revenue of at least NT$3 million.
    • Or, if you are renewing for the second or third time, the average annual revenue from the last three years is at least NT$3 million.
  • The operating expenses of your business for the last year (or the average annual expenses of the last three years) are at least NT$1 million.
  • You have at least three full-time Taiwanese employees in your company.
  • You are able to demonstrate that your company is positively contributing to Taiwan’s economic development in some other way.

If you fulfill any of those conditions, you may apply to renew your ARC at least 40 days before your current one expires at the National Immigration Agency.

Once you obtain five years of temporary residence in Taiwan, you are eligible for permanent residency: the Alien Permanent Resident Certificate (APRC). You can apply for the APRC if you’ve spent at least 183 days per year in Taiwan out of the last 5 years and if you can give proof of self-sufficiency.

Can I bring my family members with a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa?

Yes, you can. The Entrepreneur Visa for Taiwan allows you to include your immediate family members (spouse and dependent children under 20 years of age) on your application, who will count as your dependents.

Nationals of several countries are able to go to Taiwan (officially known as the Republic of China (ROC)) and stay for up to a year as part of a Working Holiday Scheme.

Foreign nationals who receive a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa, as the name suggests, are allowed to work during their stay, which may not exceed 1 year.

This article will detail the eligibility criteria, conditions, requirements, and application process of a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan.

Who is eligible for a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa?

You are eligible for a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan if you are a national of the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Czech Republic
  • France
  • Germany
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Luxembourg
  • New Zealand
  • Poland
  • Slovakia
  • The United Kingdom

In addition to your nationality, you must also fulfill certain other eligibility criteria, such as:

  • You must be between 18 and 30 years of age at the time you submit your application
    • Exceptions:
      • For Canada, Slovakia, and Hungary nationals, the maximum age is 35
      • For nationals of the Czech Republic, the maximum age is 26
    • You must be living in your country of nationality at the time of application
    • You must never have received a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan previously
    • You must have at least NT$ 100,000 (or its equivalent in your country’s currency) to cover your living expenses during your stay in Taiwan
    • You must be able to prove that your primary reason to visit Taiwan is to holiday, rather than to work (work must be an “incidental” reason)

Conditions of the Working Holiday Taiwan Visa

If you receive a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan, you must adhere to certain conditions, including:

  • You cannot work for the same employer for longer than 3 months
    • This does not apply if you are from Korea, Japan, Canada and the U.K.
    • If you are from Australia, you may work for the same employer for up to 6 months, but no longer.
  • If you will work in technical or professional jobs, you must meet the adequate qualification and laws of registration for practice as required by the Taiwan government.
  • You are not allowed to enroll in full-time formal courses in any Taiwanese educational institution. You are only allowed to enroll in Chinese language courses, and even then, the study period must not be longer than 3 months.
  • You will not be allowed to bring any dependents with you to Taiwan.
  • You will not be eligible for National Health Insurance, unless you are from the UK.
  • You cannot apply to turn the Working Holiday Visa into another type of Taiwan visa.

What are the requirements of a Taiwan Working Holiday Visa?

When applying for a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan, you must have several supporting documents such as:

  • The Working Holiday Taiwan Visa Application Form.
  • Your passport, which must be valid for at least another year
  • Two recent pictures of yourself, which:
    • Are 2-inch x 2-inch
    • Are taken within the last 6 months
  • Proof of a roundtrip flight ticket, or alternatively, proof you have the financial means to buy it.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover at least the initial period of your stay. You must have at least NT$ 100,000 (or its equivalent in your country’s currency)
  • Proof of health insurance covering the entire duration of your stay in Taiwan.
  • If you are from Australia or Canada: Health Certificate issued by a doctor in your country.
  • An outline of your planned stay in Taiwan. You must be able to prove your main purpose is not to work but rather holidays.
  • Any additional documents that the Taiwanese diplomatic missions may require you to submit.

How to Apply for a Taiwan Working Holiday Visa?

You have to apply for a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission in your country. The application process for a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan is as follows:

  1. Collect the required documents.
  2. Submit them at the Taiwanese diplomatic mission in your country.
  3. Pay the visa fee.
  4. Wait for the visa to be processed. You may also be asked to enter a visa interview.
  5. If your visa is approved, you must collect your passport with the visa affixed to it.
  6. You may enter the country within one year of issuance of the visa (three months for UK nationals).
  7. If you are from the UK: Apply for a residence permit within 15 days of entering.

Exceptions:

Canadian citizens may also apply for a Working Holiday Visa even from inside Taiwan.

What are the Working Holiday Taiwan Visa Fees?

Taiwan visa fees are as follows:

If applying at a Taiwan Diplomatic Mission Overseas:

  • Single-Entry Visitor Visa: US$50
  • Multiple-Entry Visitor Visa: US$100
  • Single-Entry Resident Visa: US$66
  • Multiple-Entry Resident Visa: US$132

If applying in Taiwan:

  • Single-Entry Visitor Visa: NT$1,600
  • Multiple-Entry Visitor Visa: NT$3,200
  • Single-Entry Resident Visa: NT$2,200
  • Multiple-Entry Resident Visa: NT$4,400

What is the Validity of a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa?

The Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan is issued for a maximum of 180 days (six months) and it is a multiple-entry Taiwan Visitor Visa. Before your visa expires, you must apply to renew it for another 180 days.  This makes the overall time you can spend in Taiwan on a Working Holiday Visa a maximum of 12 months.

Exception: Nationals of the UK will receive a single-entry visa valid for up to three months, and will have to obtain a residence permit within 15 days of arrival.

Extending a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa

You must apply to extend your 180-day multiple-entry Working Holiday Visa at least 15 days before it expires at a local office of the National Immigration Agency in Taiwan. You may extend your visa for another 180 days maximum.

If you are from the UK, your residence permit valid will be valid for up to one year, which means it cannot be extended.

Once you have spent 12 months in Taiwan, you are not allowed to apply for another extension.

Do You Need a Residence Permit for a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa?

Unless you are from the UK, once you arrive in Taiwan with a Working Holiday Visa, you do not have to apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC). Your visa will be valid for six months, after which you may apply to extend it.

If you are from the UK, after you enter Taiwan with your Working Holiday Taiwan Visa, you must apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) from the National Immigration Agency within 15 days. The ARC will be valid for one year and non-extendable.

Do you need a work permit for a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa?

No, you do not. If you receive a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan, you do not have to apply for a separate work permit before or afterward as you would for a Taiwan Work Visa. The Working Holiday Visa automatically allows you to take up work and is regarded as a work permit.

Foreign nationals who wish to join a family member in Taiwan must apply for a Taiwan Join Family Visa. The Join Family Visa is one of the types of Taiwan Resident Visas, which are issued for long-term stays.

You are eligible to apply for a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa (JFRV) if you fall under one of the following categories:

  • You are the foreign spouse of a Taiwan citizen
  • You are the child or grandchild under 20 years of age of a Taiwan citizen

If you are the spouse or dependent of a foreigner who is in Taiwan with a work permit (ie. not a Taiwan citizen), you can also apply for a Resident Visa to join them but there are different rules you have to follow once there.

Requirements for a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa

When you apply for a Taiwan Family Visa, you must have several documents to support your application, such as:

  • Completed Taiwan Resident Visa Online Application Form, completed and signed.
  • Your passport, valid for at least another six months and with at least three blank pages where the visa can be affixed.
  • A photocopy of your passport’s personal information page showing your picture.
  • Two passport-sized pictures, taken within the last six months.
  • Payment of the Taiwan Visa fee
  • Health Certificate, issued in the past three months by a hospital in your country or a hospital authorized by the Centers for Disease Control of Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare (the original and a photocopy)
    • If your Health Certificate is issued by a hospital in your country, you must legalize the document at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission before you submit it.
    • Children under six years of age are exempt from having a Health Certificate
  • Certificate of Police Clearance issued by the competent police authorities in your country in the past year.
  • For spouses: Marriage registration or a marriage certificate (the original and a photocopy).
  • If your family member has Taiwan Household Registration: Household Registration Certificate showing marriage registration, your name in your native language and your nationality (the original and a photocopy).
  • If your family member does not have Taiwan Household Registration: Their Alien Residence Certificate or Alien Permanent Residence Certificate, which must be valid for at least another six months (the original and a photocopy)
  • For children under 20 joining a parent:
    • Birth certificate showing the parents’ names (original and a photocopy)
    • Proof of their parent’s marriage (original document and a photocopy)
    • Proof of their parent’s Household Registration, if the parents are Taiwan citizens (original and a photocopy)
    • If the parents are divorced: Proof of custody (original and photocopy)
  • For children under 20 joining a grandparent:
    • Permission from the parents or legal guardians, allowing the minor to travel.

Note:

This is not an exhaustive list of requirements. The Taiwanese authorities handling your application may request any additional documents depending on your case.

All the documents you submit have to be either in Chinese or English. If they are not, they must be translated and both the original and the translation have to be submitted.

Translations of documents have to be authenticated by a Taiwanese diplomatic mission overseas before you submit them.

How to Apply for a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa?

There are two ways through which you can apply for a Taiwan Family Visa:

  • Abroad at a Taiwan diplomatic mission
  • In Taiwan, at the Bureau of Consular Affairs

Applying for a Taiwan Family Visa abroad

You may apply for your Join Family Resident Visa before you travel to Taiwan from a Taiwanese diplomatic mission (such as an embassy or consulate). The application process is as follows:

  • Complete the online Taiwan Resident Visa Application here. Print it and sign it.
  • Collect the required documents (see “Requirements” below).
  • Submit the application and the documents at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission.
    • You choose which Taiwanese diplomatic mission you will submit your application when you complete the online application form.
    • You may apply at any diplomatic mission or representative office, but it is recommended you apply at the one in your country (or the nearest, if there’s no Taiwan representation in your country).
  • Pay the Taiwan visa fee.
  • You may also be asked to enter an interview.
  • If the Taiwan diplomatic mission staff consider that your application needs further review, they will forward it to the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Taiwan.
  • Wait for the visa to be processed.
  • If your visa application is approved, you have three months to enter Taiwan.
  • Within 15 days of entering the country, you must apply for a residence permit at the National Immigration Agency.

Applying for a Taiwan Family Visa in Taiwan

If you have already entered Taiwan on a Visitor Visa, you can apply to turn it into a Resident Visa without leaving the country. You must apply for your visa at the Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) at least eight days before your Taiwan Visitor Visa is set to expire.

Once the BOCA issues your Resident Visa, you must apply for a residence permit at the National Immigration Agency within 15 days.

Residence Permit for Taiwan Family Visa

Every foreign national who wishes to stay in Taiwan long-term has to obtain a residence permit, which is known as an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), from a local service center of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency.

It is the ARC which allows the holder to remain in the country for longer than three months. An ARC can be issued for one, two, or three years and it is renewable. You must renew your ARC at least thirty days before it expires.

Once a foreigner has lived in Taiwan with an ARC for at least five years consistently, they may be eligible to get a Taiwan Alien Permanent Resident Certificate (APRC). You can apply for the APRC if you’ve spent at least 183 days per year in Taiwan out of the last 5 years and if you can give proof of self-sufficiency.

What is the Validity of a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa?

As all Resident Visas, a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa is valid for a maximum of three months on its own. This is why you have to obtain an Alien Resident Certificate, which is what actually allows you to legally live in Taiwan for an extended amount of time.

Additionally, a Resident Visa only allows the holder to enter Taiwan once, whereas the ARC also works as a re-entry permit, allowing you multiple entries into the country.

Can you Work With a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa?

Yes, you can, but the rules change depending on the nationality of your family member.

If you are married to a Taiwanese citizen and you receive a Join Family Resident Visa along with an ARC, you do not need a separate work permit to be allowed to work in Taiwan. Your Resident Visa and ARC automatically allow you to work.

However, if you are the foreign spouse or dependent of an ARC/Resident Visa holder, you must obtain your own Work Permit to be allowed to work in Taiwan.

The acceptable method of payment depends on the location through which you submit your Taiwan visa application. How to Apply for a Taiwan (Gold Card) Digital Nomad Visa?

You must apply for a Taiwan (Gold Card) digital nomad visa online through the official Taiwan Employment Gold Card website. The application process is as follows:

  1. Prepare the required documents. You must have digital copies of the documents, so you can upload them to the online platform. The documents you need are in the section “Requirements for Taiwan (Gold Card) Digital Nomad Visa”.
  2. Register in the online application. Go to the Foreign Professionals Online Application Platform website and create an account. Remember, you need to change your password every three months.
  3. Access the online application form. The link to the application form can be found here. Fill it out with information and make sure your name is the same as the one on your passport. You can save the added information and come back to it at any time.
  4. Upload the documents. Make sure to add the additional documents for your profession as well. You must submit documents that comply with the requirements for the qualification you are applying for. Note: Hong Kong and Macau residents may be required to provide proof of residence and identity.
  5. Pay the fees. After submitting the online application, the system will email you a 12-digit application number. Then log into your account and enter the “online payment” tab. You can choose from six different payment methods. The visa fees are $100 to $310, depending on your nationality and duration of stay. The application fee is non-refundable.
  6. Get confirmation. Once you’ve completed the application, you’ll receive an e-mail confirmation from the platform. The review process has now begun for your application.
  7. Submit your passport for a passport check If your application has been approved and has passed the qualification review, you will receive an e-mail notification to bring your passport to be inspected. Your passport will be inspected by the Bureau of Consular Affairs or a ROC overseas mission/office. Upon verification, you’ll receive an e-mail stating that your passport was approved and your gold card application was processed. This process might take a week.
  8. Receive your Gold Card. After your application has been approved, you will get an email notifying you that you can get your Gold Card.

Additionally, you might need a visa to enter Taiwan, depending on your nationality.

Requirements for Taiwan (Gold Card) Digital Nomad Visa

The list of the required documents is when applying for a Taiwanese Gold Card as a digital nomad is:

  • Digital copy of your passport. The passport must be valid for at least six months.
  • Digital copy of your passport photo. The dimensions of the photos must be 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). The head must be between 1 -1 3/8 inches (25 – 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
  • Your previous Taiwanese visa or residence permit (if any).
  • Dates of any times you have worked in Taiwan (if applicable).
  • Proof of employment. To prove your employment, the required documents depend on your profession. You can check what documents are needed through the official Taiwan Employment Gold Card website. On the website, you can click on the Qualifications | Taiwan Gold Card section to find out more.
  • Proof of income. If you are not part of the eight fields, you have to have a $5,700 monthly income.

How Long Can I Work in Taiwan as a Digital Nomad?

The validity of the Taiwan Gold Card for digital nomads is from one year to three years. You can apply for permanent residence after five years.

Processing Time For A Digital Nomad Visa (Gold Card) in Taiwan

The application usually takes thirty days. However, if additional documents need to be submitted, the processing time can be fifty to sixty days.

How Much Does the Taiwan (Gold Card) Digital Nomad Visa Cost?

The visa fees are $100 to $310, depending on your nationality and duration of stay. The application fee is non-refundable, regardless of the results of your application.

Paying Taxes as a Digital Nomad in Taiwan

Non-residents who live in Taiwan for less than 90 days in a calendar year are subject to an 18% withholding tax on their salary that comes from Taiwan. In the case of a digital nomad, the salary is not derived from Taiwan and will be exempt from taxes.

Digital nomads are free from income taxes until the 183rd day of their stay. However, an individual who lives in Taiwan for more than 90 days in a full calendar year but for less than 183 days is subject to a flat-rate tax of 18%, regardless of whether their salary is from a Taiwan-based company.

In Taiwan, personal income tax is progressive. For residents, the tax rate is:

  • For an income of $17,982.92 – 5%
  • For an income of $17,982.92 to $40,295.05 – 12%
  • For an income of $40,295.05 to $80,590.10  – 20%
  • For an income of $80,590.10 to $150856.68 – 30%
  • For an income of over $150856.68 – 40%

In addition, Taiwan has a basic income tax, the rate of which is 20%. Furthermore, corporate income is paid at the rate of 20%, the payment of dividends is subject to a 21% withholding tax, and the property tax is paid at the rates of 1% to 5.5%.

  • Taiwan Work Permit, which authorizes you to work
  • Taiwan Work Visa, which allows you to travel to Taiwan for the purpose of employment
  • Taiwan Residence Permit (Alien Resident Certificate (ARC)), which allows you to live in Taiwan long-term

However, not everyone can just up and move to Taiwan and hope to get a job. The Taiwanese government only issues Taiwan work permits to specific categories of workers. Additionally, before you can even apply for a Taiwan work visa, you must first have a job offer in Taiwan.

Who is Eligible for a Work Permit for Taiwan?

According to the Workforce Development Agency of the Taiwan Ministry of Labor, only the following foreign professionals are eligible to work in Taiwan:

  • Specialized or Technical Workers in one of the following fields:
    • Civil Engineering or Practice of Architecture
    • Communications and Transportation
    • Tax and Financial Services
    • Practice of Real Estate Agency
    • Immigration Services
    • Practice of Attorneys, or of Patent Attorneys

  • The Director or Manager of a business established or invested by an overseas Chinese national or a foreign national
  • School Teachers
  • Foreign Teachers in Cram Schools (full-time)
  • Sports Coaches or Athletes
  • Artists and Performing Artists
  • Contract Worker (construction, sale, technical cooperation etc)

In addition, if you find a job in any of the aforementioned sectors of employment, your salary cannot be lower than the average monthly salary determined by the central competent authority.

How to Apply for a Taiwan Work Permit?

It is your employer who has to get a Taiwan work permit for you. They can apply for your work permit in one of the two following ways:

  • Online, through the website of the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) of the Ministry of Labor; or
  • By submitting the application at the reception counter of the Workforce Development Agency of the Ministry of Labor (either in person or by registered mail)

Once your employer obtains a Taiwan work permit on your behalf, then depending on your situation, you may:

  • Apply for a Taiwan Work Visa (if you are abroad); or
  • Apply for a Taiwan residence permit (if you are already in Taiwan on a Visitor Visa)

**Work Permit applications for School Teachers have to be obtained at the Taiwan Ministry of Education, not the WDA.

What are the Requirements for a Taiwan Work Visa?

When submitting a Taiwan work visa application, you must have the following documents:

  • Completed Work Visa Application Form, printed and signed.
  • Two passport-size pictures, taken within the past six months. They must have a white background without any patterns. Dimensions must be 35mm by 45mm without a border.
  • Your passport, valid for at least another six months and with at least three blank pages where the visa can be affixed.
  • Health Certificate issued in the past three months (original and photocopy). Before you apply for a Taiwan work visa, you must get a Health Certificate by a hospital appointed by the Centers for Disease Control of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan or a hospital in your home country. If you receive a health certificate from a non-Taiwanese hospital, you must have it legalized by a Taiwanese diplomatic mission.
  • The Taiwan Work Permit (original and photocopy) which is valid for at least six more months.
  • Any additional documents based on your profession.

This is not an exhaustive list of documents. The Taiwan authorities may request additional documents that they see fit on a case-to-case basis.

All the documents you submit have to be in either English or Chinese. If they are not, they must be translated by an official translator and authenticated by a Taiwan overseas diplomatic mission.

How to Apply for a Taiwan Work Visa?

A Taiwan work visa is one of the types of Taiwan Resident Visa, which is issued for long-stay purposes. You can apply for a Taiwan work visa in one of two ways:

  • Abroad: at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission (embassy, consulate, etc).
  • In Taiwan, at the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) or any of its offices

Applying for a Taiwan work visa at a Taiwan diplomatic mission

After your employer obtains a work permit for you, you must apply for a Taiwan work visa at a Taiwan diplomatic mission. The application process is as follows:

  • Complete the Taiwan Work Visa Application Form online (here). Print it and sign it.
  • Collect the required documents (see below)
  • Submit the application form and the documents at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission in person within 30 days of completing the online application.
    • When you complete the application form, you will have to select which diplomatic mission you will apply in from a dropdown menu.
    • You may apply at any mission, but you are advised to apply in the one in your country. If there’s no Taiwanese diplomatic mission in your country, apply to the nearest one.
  • Wait for the Taiwan work visa to be processed
    • The diplomatic mission staff could also request an interview, if they think it is necessary
    • If they think your application requires additional examination, they will forward it to the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Taiwan, who will notify them of what decision to make.
  • Collect your passport. If your application was approved, your visa will be affixed to your passport
  • After entering Taiwan, apply for a Taiwan residence permit at a local service center of the National Immigration Agency within 15 days.

Applying for a work visa once you’re already in Taiwan

If you are already in Taiwan with a Visitor Visa for employment purposes (such as business, investment, employment-seeking), you do not have to leave the country to apply for a Resident Visa. You can apply to turn your Visitor Visa into a Resident Work Visa at the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Taiwan.

You must apply for the Taiwan Resident (Work) Visa after your employer obtains your work permit, and at least 8 days before your Visitor Visa expires.

Once the BOCA issues your work visa, you must apply for a Taiwan residence permit at a local service center of the National Immigration Agency within 15 days.

Taiwan Residence Permit for Foreign Workers

Even though the Taiwan work permit allows you to work and the work visa allows you entry into the country, you cannot stay in Taiwan longer than 90 days unless you have a valid residence permit. The residence permit for Taiwan is called an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) and must be obtained from a local service center of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency.

The ARC can be issued for one, two, or three years and is renewable.

How Long is a Taiwan Work Visa Valid For?

The work visa itself is valid for a maximum of three months. However, if you intend to work for longer than that, you must get an ARC that is issued for one, two, or three years.

Can you Extend a Taiwan Work Visa?

No, you cannot extend the Taiwan work visa itself. However, if you will work in Taiwan for longer than three months, you must receive an ARC that may be renewed. You must apply to renew an ARC at least 30 days before your current one expires at the National Immigration Agency in Taiwan.

Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), is a great place to study in, for various reasons. For one, it has a great quality of education, high standards of living and it is a safe place to live in. Second, Taiwanese universities offer a lot of courses in English, and, of course, the people there are said to be very friendly to foreigners. Additionally, you’d be able to explore its diverse and interesting culture and the breathtaking natural beauty of this Asian island.

So, if you have already made up your mind about studying in Taiwan, this article will detail the Taiwan student visa: the types, requirements, application process, and more.

What are the Types of Taiwan Student Visas?

The Taiwan student visa is a type of Resident Visas (the type of visa issued for long-term stays). The types of Taiwan student visa offered are:

  • Taiwan student visa for full-time foreign students (PhD, MA, BA, high school or below)
  • Taiwan student visa for international exchange students
  • Taiwan student visa for overseas Chinese students wishing to study in Taiwan (at a Taiwanese university, college, vocational school, high school, or lower)
  • Taiwan student visa for foreigners wishing to learn Mandarin Chinese

What are the Requirements for a Taiwan Student Visa?

When applying for a Taiwan student visa, you must have several documents to support your application, such as:

  • Taiwan Student Visa Application Form completed online, printed, and signed
  • Your passport, which is valid for at least 6 more months and has at least three blank pages
  • Two passport-sized pictures of yourself, taken within the past six months and affixed to your application form
  • Proof of enrollment in the Taiwan educational institution where you will be studying.
    • If you are already studying in Taiwan on a Visitor Visa and want to change it to a Resident Visa, you must also include proof of registration and enrollment and school transcripts
  • Health Certificate issued in the past three months (original and photocopy). Before you apply for a Taiwan student visa, you must get a Health Certificate by a hospital appointed by the Centers for Disease Control of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan or a hospital in your home country. If you receive a health certificate from a non-Taiwanese hospital, you must have it legalized by a Taiwanese diplomatic mission.
  • For full-time foreign students:
    • If you will study in a Taiwan high school or a lower level, you must be from a Taiwan visa-exempt country.
    • Proof of financial support, if applicable (original and photocopy)
  • For international exchange students:
    • Proof of enrollment of the school or university in which you are already enrolled in (original and photocopy)
    • For a senior high school student: Letter of approval by the Taiwan Ministry of Education
  • For Mandarin Chinese language students:
    • A Certificate of enrollment and registration issued by one of the Mandarin Chinese Learning Centers
    • Proof you have finished four months of studies and registered for at least another three months
    • Proof you have attended at least 15 hours of classes weekly (Monday to Friday)
    • Record of attendance, proving you have not missed more than a quarter of the overall class hours (original and photocopy)
    • School transcripts (original and photocopy)
    • A study plan
    • Proof of financial support, if applicable (original and photocopy)
  • For Overseas Chinese Students:
    • If you are an overseas Chinese student wishing to study in Taiwan, you must be determined by the Overseas Community Affairs Council as a qualified overseas Chinese student.
    • You need an approval letter issued by the Overseas Community Affairs Council and a notice of assignment issued by the Ministry of Education.

 Keep in mind:

This is not an exhaustive list of documents required for a Taiwan student visa. The Taiwan authorities may request additional documents that they see fit on a case-to-case basis.

All the documents you submit have to be in either English or Chinese. If they are not, they must be translated by an official translator and authenticated by a Taiwan overseas diplomatic mission.

How to Get a Taiwan Student Visa?

There are two ways through which you can get a Taiwan student visa:

  • Before you arrive in Taiwan, at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission (embassy, consulate, etc).
  • After you arrive in Taiwan, at the Bureau of Consular Affairs or any of its offices.

However, in both cases, you must already be accepted in a Taiwanese educational institution before you apply.

*Slightly different requirements apply for foreign students wishing to study Mandarin Chinese (see below).

Applying abroad: at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission

The application procedure for getting a Taiwan student visa while you are still in your home country is as follows:

  1. Complete the Taiwan Student Visa Application Form online (here). Print it and sign it.
  2. Collect the required documents.

*Applying as a student of Mandarin Chinese

If you want to study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan, you must first enter the country with a Visitor Visa with the purpose of studying Chinese. After you finish four months of studies, you may apply to turn your Visitor Visa into a Resident (student) visa at the Bureau of Consular Affairs. You have to apply at least 8 days before your current Visitor Visa expires.

After getting the Taiwan student visa, you must apply for a Taiwan residence permit as well.

Residence Permit for Taiwan Student Visa

Once you receive a Taiwan student visa, the next step is to get a Taiwan residence permit. It is the residence permit, known as an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), that allows you to remain in the country long-term, not the student visa itself. To get a Taiwan ARC, you must apply at a local service center of the National Immigration Agency within 15 days of arriving in Taiwan :

  • Complete an online application, which is available on the website of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency
  • Print the application form and take it to an office of the National Immigration Agency along with the following documents:
    • Your passport, with the Taiwan student visa (Resident Visa), affixed
    • Your Student ID Card or a Certificate of Enrollment at your educational institution
    • A recent colored picture of yourself (2-inch x 2-inch)

What is the Duration of a Taiwan Student Visa?

Since the actual Taiwan student visa is more of an entry visa, it is usually valid for up to three months. However, to be allowed to stay in Taiwan long-term, you must get an Alien Residence Certificate, which can be issued for one, two, or three years, at the Immigration officer’s decision.

Can I Extend a Taiwan Student Visa?

Yes, you can. However, when it comes to the Taiwan student visa itself, you may only extend it for an additional three months, making your residence in Taiwan a maximum of six months.

If your course of study will take longer than that, you need the Alien Residence Certificate, issued for one, two, or three years.

And if you need to stay longer than the duration your ARC was issued for, you must apply for an extension at the National Immigration Agency at least 30 days before your current ARC expires.

Can I Work With a Taiwan Student Visa?

Yes, you can but not by default. Neither the Taiwan student visa by itself nor the ARC for studying purposes automatically allows the holder to work. To be allowed to work in Taiwan as an international student, you must obtain a Taiwan work permit from the Workforce Development Agency (WDA).

Certain foreign nationals who wish to travel to Taiwan (officially known as the Republic of China or ROC), need to be in possession of a Taiwan visa, depending on the purpose of their travel as well as the duration of stay. There are two main types of visas for Taiwan:

  • Taiwan Visitor Visa, which is most commonly referred to as a Taiwan Tourist Visa, issued for stays of up to 90 days.
  • Taiwan Resident Visa, which is issued for stays longer than 90 days. The Taiwan Work Visa, Student Visa, Family Reunion Visa, etc., are types of the Resident Visa.

Who Needs a Taiwan Tourist Visa?

You must have a visa before traveling to Taiwan unless you are from a visa-exempt country.

Several countries have reached a visa-waiver agreement with Taiwan, which means their nationals may travel to Taiwan visa-free for short stays (up to 14, 21, 30, and 90 days depending on the country).

For example, all EU and EFTA nationals can travel to Taiwan without a visa and stay there for up to 90 days. For longer stays, they will need a Taiwan Resident Visa.

What are the Types of Taiwan Visitor Visas?

The Taiwan visitor visas are divided based on their purpose. As such, the most common types are the:

  • Taiwan Tourist Visa, which is issued to visa-required foreign nationals who want to visit Taiwan for tourism purposes.
  • Taiwan Business Visa, which is issued to visa-required foreign nationals who will travel to Taiwan for business-related purposes, such as to attend a meeting.

  • Original passport, with a validity of at least six more months after the date of arrival and with at least three blank pages.
  • Passport-size pictures: 35mm by 45mm, with a white background.
  • Travel itinerary/travel ticket, proving you intend to leave Taiwan after your visa expires.
  • Proof of accommodation in Taiwan, such as a hotel reservation, letter of invitation from your host, etc.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover the duration of your stay.

For a Business Visa:

  • Proof you are traveling for business:
    • Letter from your company, stating you are employed there and the details of your assignment

  • The details of your contact in Taiwan: their name, address, phone number etc.

How Long Can Does it Take to Get a Tourist Visa for Taiwan?

The time it takes to process a Taiwan tourist visa depends on the specific diplomatic mission where you are applying from. However, in most cases, it takes somewhere between 2 to 5 working days to process a visa, starting from the time they receive your completed application.

The processing time may be affected by any mission documents or whether the diplomatic mission has to refer your application to the Bureau of Consular Affairs for approval.

How Long Can I Stay in Taiwan With a Tourist Visa?

A Taiwan Tourist Visa allows the holder to stay in Taiwan for a maximum of 90 days from the day of arrival. Some countries have a shorter allowed time of stays such as 14, 30, or 60 days. The visa for Taiwan is valid for:

  • Up to three months, if you have a single-entry Taiwan visa
  • Up to five years, if you have a multiple-entry Taiwan visa

Can you extend a Taiwan Tourist Visa?

Yes, you can. You can extend a Taiwan tourist visa at a local office of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency before your current visa expires if you have a valid reason.

If you are eligible for an eVisa, you do not have to go to any Taiwanese diplomatic mission – the entire application process takes place online. You may apply here, and after it is processed, you will receive your eVisa via email. Then, you must print it and show it to the immigration officers after you travel.

Taiwan Landing Visa (Visa On Arrival)

The Taiwan Landing Visa is issued after the foreigner arrives in Taiwan. However, it is only available to:

  • Turkish citizens
  • Holders of emergency or temporary passports issued by a visa-exempt country

If you are eligible for a Taiwan Landing Visa, you can receive it after you arrive at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Other eligible points of entry are:

  • Taipei Songshan Airport
  • Kaohsiung International Airport
  • Taichung Airport

If you arrive through one of the last three points of entry, you will receive an entry permit, which allows you to enter Taiwan. But then you also have to apply for the Taiwan visa at one of the following:

Entry Requirements to Taiwan for Citizens of the PRC, Hong Kong, and Macau

If you are from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Macau or Hong Kong, you cannot apply for a Taiwan Tourist Visa. Instead, you need an Exit and Entry Permit, which can be issued in one of two ways:

  • Single-entry Exit and Entry Permit, issued on an A4 paper.
  • Multiple-entry Exit and Entry Permit, which is on the form of a passport-size booklet.

If you are from Hong Kong and Macau, you need an Entry and Exit Permit if you have one of the following travel documents:

  • Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport (HKSAR)
  • British National (Overseas) passport (BN(O))
  • Macao Special Administrative Region passport (MSAR)

If you have another nationality or are living in another country, you don’t have to get an Entry and Exit Permit since you are not considered as a resident. Instead, you will be subject to the visa requirements of your second country of nationality.

If you are from the People’s Republic of China, you have to get an Entry and Exit Permit but you are also subject to a daily quota of visitors to Taiwan (14,600 persons per day, where half of the quota should go to individual tour applicants). If you have obtained another nationality, you must follow the Taiwan visa requirements of your current nationality. Even so, as a former PRC citizen, you may still face some restrictions when you travel to Taiwan, such as:

  • You may still have to get a visa because you were born in China, even if you’re currently a national of a visa-exempt country
  • You need an Exit and Entry Permit to enter Taiwan if you have only lived outside China for less than 4 years

If you want to visit Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), you may have to apply for a Taiwan visa.

Even though most foreigners do need to get a Taiwan visa, there are certain countries whose nationals are allowed to travel to Taiwan visa-free, provided they will only stay short-term (up to 14, 21, 30, or 90 days depending on the country) and for tourism, business, or visiting purposes.

If you are not from a visa-exempt country, then you have to apply for a Taiwan visa if you want to be allowed entry into the country. This article will detail the Taiwan visa application process, including the Taiwan eVisa and Visa On Arrival.

Taiwan Visa Application Process

You have to apply for a Taiwan visa in person at a Taiwan diplomatic mission abroad, preferably in your country. However, before appearing at the Taiwanese diplomatic mission, you have to complete and print an online Taiwan Visa Application Form. The Taiwan visa application process is as follows:

  • Complete, print and sign the electronic Taiwan Visa Application Form
  • Collect the required documents for a Taiwan visa
  • Submit the application and the required documents at a Taiwan diplomatic mission

Complete the Taiwan Visa Application From

The first part of a Taiwan visa application is completing the visa application form, which the Taiwan government has made accessible online. You can access the Taiwan Visa Application Form through this website. The fields you must complete include:

  • Your personal details, such as your name, nationality, gender, birth date and place, marital status, details of your spouse (if any), employment status, address, contact details, etc.
  • The details of your passport, such as issue/expiry date, type of passport, and passport number.
  • The type of visa you want
  • Selecting the Taiwanese diplomatic mission where you will submit the visa application to from a dropdown menu.
  • Details regarding the purpose of your travel
  • Contact information of your host/contact in Taiwan
  • Stating whether you are submitting an application on someone else’s behalf.

After starting an application, you can select “Save Draft” and exit the application to complete it at another time. If you remain on one section of the application form for longer than 30 minutes without saving, you will lose that section and have to restart.

Collect the required documents

When you submit a Taiwan visa application, you must have several supporting documents, such as:

  • The printed Taiwan Visa Application Form
  • Your passport or another travel document, valid for at least six more months from the date of entry to Taiwan.
  • Two passport-sized pictures
  • A return/onward travel ticket, which proves you intend to leave after your stay in Taiwan is over.

You can select the diplomatic mission where you will submit your documents from a dropdown menu on the online application. However, even though you may apply for a Taiwan visa at any Taiwanese diplomatic mission, you should do so at the nearest one to where you live.

  • The diplomatic mission staff may request an interview with you if they think it is necessary.
  • You have to pay the Taiwan visa fee at the time of application.
  • If all is in order with your application, they will issue your visa and notify you when you can pick up your passport with an affixed visa.
  • If the Taiwan diplomatic mission considers that your application needs further review, they will forward it to the Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA). Once the BOCA approves your application, they will notify the diplomatic mission, who then issues you your visa.
  • Some diplomatic missions require you to appear yourself for document submission, while others may allow you to authorize someone else to apply on your behalf.
  • If you want to receive your passport via mail, you have to include a self-addressed and prepaid envelope along with your documents.

Hong Kong and Macau citizens need an Entry and Exit Permit if they have one of the following:

  • Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport (HKSAR)
  • British National (Overseas) passport (BN(O))
  • Macao Special Administrative Region passport (MSAR)

If it is the first time you’re getting the Taiwan Entry and Exit Permit, you can apply for it online. Once you have already entered Taiwan with the Permit once, you can then obtain it through a simplified method online or upon arrival to Taiwan.

If you are from Hong Kong or Macau but have obtained the nationality of another country, you no longer need the Entry and Exit Permit. You are subject to the rules of the country you’re living in.

Citizens of the People’s Republic of China need a travel authorization known as a Mainland Resident Travel Permit which they can receive from the Chinese authorities. They also need an Entry and Exit Permit, and can only receive it if they are part of a pre-approved group tour.

When applying for a visa to Taiwan, you must have several supporting documents with you. The Taiwan visa requirements differ from country to country as well as depending on the purpose of your travel. But there is a standard list of documents everyone must have.

However, not everyone needs a visa to visit Taiwan – some can travel there with simply their passport and flight tickets for stays of up to 14, 21, 30, or 90 days. The time you can spend in Taiwan without a visa depends on your nationality.

If you do need a visa, you must apply for one from your country of residence before you intend to travel. This article will detail the Taiwan visa requirements for standard visas, eVisas, as well as visa-free travel.

What are the Taiwan Visa Requirements?

The Taiwan visa requirements include:

  • Completed Taiwan Visa Application Form.
  • Original passport.
  • Passport-size pictures.
  • Travel itinerary/travel ticket.
  • Proof of accommodation in Taiwan.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means.
  • Employment status documents.
  • Taiwan visa fee.
  • Specific documents for minors.
  • Additional documents depending on the purpose of travel.

Taiwan Visa Application Form

The Taiwan visa requirement is completing the application form. You must complete the form online, print it, sign it and submit it to the Taiwan diplomatic representation (see document submission requirements below) along with the other documents.

You can complete the Taiwan visa application form here. You’ll have to answer questions such as:

  • Your personal details: name, nationality, gender, birth date and place, marital status, details of your spouse (if any), employment status, address, contact details, etc.
  • The details of your passport: issue/expiry date, type of passport, and passport number.
  • The type of visa you want
  • Which Taiwanese diplomatic mission you will submit the visa application to.
  • Details regarding the purpose of your travel
  • Contact information of your host/contact in Taiwan
  • Whether you are submitting an application on someone else’s behalf.

Passport

You have to submit your original passport, which should be valid for at least another six months starting from the time you enter Taiwan. The passport must also have at least three blank pages which the Taiwanese authorities will use to affix your visa and the entry and exit stamps.

You may also be required to submit photocopies of the relevant pages on your passport, such as your personal information, issue, and expiry date, and previous visas.

Some diplomatic missions may also ask for previous visas if you had any.

Pictures

Along with your application, you should submit two recent pictures of yourself, taken within the last six months, which follow these specifications:

  • Dimensions: 35mm by 45mm without a border
  • Your face must take up 70% – 80% of the picture. Must include the tops of your shoulders.
  • Colored picture, printed on high-quality photo paper
  • White background without any patterns
  • Your expression:
    • You must have a neutral facial expression, with the mouth closed
    • You must stare ahead, with a straight head position (not tilted)
    • Your eyes must be fully open and visible
  • Your attire:
    • No white tops
    • No flashy jewelry
    • No headgear, unless it is for religious purposes. Even so, it cannot obstruct your face at all.
    • Eyeglasses are not recommended. However, if you must wear them make sure they do not cover your face or eyes at any capacity. No tinted glasses!
  • The picture must be high quality, without any blurriness, over- or under-exposure, or glare.

Travel itinerary/travel ticket

As part of the Taiwan visa requirements, you should include a confirmed flight ticket showing the dates of entry and departure from Taiwan.

Proof of accommodation in Taiwan

You must give proof of where you intend to stay while you are in Taiwan. This could be a confirmed hotel reservation, a letter from your host (if you are visiting someone), or another type of tourist accommodation.

Proof of sufficient financial means

Part of the Taiwan visa requirements is also being able to prove you can financially support yourself while you stay there.

You must submit original bank statements from the last six months, bearing the bank’s stamp and showing adequate balance.

Employment status documents

Depending on your status of employment, you have to submit:

  • A letter from your employer confirming your employment, signed and sealed. You may also be required to submit recent payslips.
  • A letter from your school, if you are a student, confirming your enrollment and a school ID card.
  • Documents proving you are self-employed.

Taiwan visa fee

All visa applicants have to pay a Taiwan visa fee. However, the method of payment changes depending on the specific Taiwanese diplomatic mission. Some may require payment by bank while others only accept visa fee payment in exact cash.

Specific requirements for minors

Minors (under 18 years of age), should also submit their original birth certificate. The parent/s or legal guardian/s have to sign the Taiwan visa application form on their behalf.

If the minor is traveling alone, they also need a letter of authorization from both parents or legal guardians allowing the minor to travel, along with copies of their IDs.

If the minor is traveling with only one parent, a letter of consent from the other parent is required.

If an interview is required, both parents have to be present there.

If one of the parents is not around (eg. divorce or death) include proof of the reason, such as custody papers or a death certificate.

Additional documents depending on the purpose of travel

Based on the reason you are traveling to Taiwan, you may have to submit additional documents, such as:

  • If you are traveling for business: An Invitation Letter from the company in Taiwan, and, if relevant, a letter from your company stating they will cover the costs of your trip
  • If you will visit friends/family members: An Invitation Letter from your host along with copies of their passports

Where do I Submit the Taiwan Visa Required Documents?

Once you complete the online part of the application, you must collect the documents and submit them all in person at a Taiwan diplomatic mission within 30 days. You choose the diplomatic in which you will submit the documents from a dropdown menu as you complete the online application form.

You should submit the documents to a Taiwanese diplomatic mission in your country. If there is none, you should go to the nearest one.

Taiwan eVisa Requirements

If you are eligible for a Taiwan eVisa, you must attach an electronic copy of your passport, a digital picture, and make the Taiwan visa fee payment via credit card.

However, you should also have to collect the following documents, even if you don’t have to attach them, because the immigration officers at the entry point in Taiwan may ask to see them before they allow you entry:

  • Travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of financial means
  • Invitation letter (if applicable)

The Taiwan government allows foreigners from certain nationalities to apply for a Taiwan visa online. The online application is easier because it does not require you to appear before any diplomatic mission – you receive your visa via email, which you can print and use it to enter Taiwan.

Taiwan Landing Visa Requirements

If you are eligible for a Taiwan Landing Visa, you must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Have a confirmed travel ticket for departing Taiwan.
  • Have a valid visa for the next country of destination (if required).
  • Pay the visa fee (NT$ 1,600) and the handling fee (NT$ 800). Turkish nationals are exempt from the visa fees.
  • Not have any criminal record and not be prohibited by the local authorities.

You are eligible for a Taiwan Landing visa if you are from Turkey or you have an emergency or temporary passports issued by a visa-exempt country.

Taiwan Visa-free Travel Requirements

If you are allowed visa-free travel to Taiwan, you must have the following documents with you upon arrival:

  • Your passport, with a validity of at least six months from the date of entry and at least two blank pages for the entry and exit stamps.
  • A confirmed travel ticket (air or ferry) showing you intend to leave Taiwan by the time your visa-free travel ends.
  • If you are from Brunei, the Philippines, Russia, and Thailand, you also need:
    • Proof of accommodation in Taiwan
    • Contact information from your contact or host in Taiwan
    • Proof of sufficient travel funds
