Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has just recently reopened its doors to the world. Despite its decades-long seclusion, the country of Myanmar has a lot to offer tourists, starting from stunning natural beauty, to its culture and history.

If you want to visit Myanmar, you will likely have to apply for a Myanmar visa. However, the Myanmar government has facilitated the visa application process. Citizens from several eligible countries can apply for a Myanmar visa online (Myanmar e Visa), without having to ever visit an Embassy or Consulate.

There are two types of Myanmar eVisas: for tourism and for business. 

Who is Eligible for a Myanmar e Visa for Tourism?

You are eligible to apply for a Myanmar eVisa for tourism purposes if you have an ordinary passport issued by one of the following countries:

Who is eligible for a Myanmar e Visa for Business?

You are eligible to apply for a Myanmar eVisa for business purposes if you have an ordinary passport issued by one of the following countries and a Letter of Invitation to you from a registered company in Myanmar:

Additionally, you must have a Letter of Invitation or Recommendation sent to you by one of the following: 

  • Thai Business Association of Myanmar
  • French – Myanmar Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FMCCI)
  • European Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar(Euro Cham Myanmar)
  • Malaysian Business Chamber
  • British Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar

How to Apply for a Myanmar eVisa?

You have to apply for a Myanmar eVisa through the official portal of the Myanmar Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population.

  • You have to start a new application by selecting the type of visa you are applying for: Tourist Visa, Business Visa, and Express Visa.
  • Fill in all the required information on the Myanmar Visa Application Form (your email address, your personal information, passport information, the port through which you will enter, the address in Myanmar, etc).
  • Upload a picture of yourself, which meets the following requirements:
    • Dimensions: 4.6 cm x 3.8 cm (1.8 inch x 1.5 inch)
    • Taken within the last three months
    • Has a plain, white background
    • You have a neutral facial expression and are facing forward
    • Your entire face is visible
    • You are not wearing any headgear or eyeglasses
  • Upload scanned copies of the required documents (see below)
  • Make the Myanmar eVisa payment through a credit/debit card (VISA, Mastercard, American Express or JCB)
  • Once your eVisa is processed, you will be notified by email. 

If the application for the Myanmar eVisa is approved, you will receive an electronic version of the visa, which you have to print.

Print one colored copy (although black and white is also acceptable) and present it to the Immigration Officers at the point of entry in Myanmar. Make sure that the printout is fully legible and clear.

Ports of Entry Where You Can Use the Myanmar eVisa

You can only use an eVisa to enter Myanmar if you are entering through one of the following points:

  • Mandalay International Airport
  • Nay Pyi Taw International Airport
  • Yangon International Airport
  • Kawthaung Land Border Checkpoint with Thailand
  • Myawaddy Land Border Checkpoint with Thailand
  • Tachileik Land Border Checkpoint with Thailand
  • Rihkhawdar Land Border Checkpoint with India
  • Tamu Land Border Checkpoint with India

Note: If you will enter through any other port, or your purpose of travel is other than tourism and business, you have to apply for a standard Myanmar Visa at an Embassy or Consulate.

How Long Does it Take to Get a Myanmar eVisa?

The processing time for a regular Myanmar eVisa is three working days, excluding weekends and Myanmar public holidays.

If you apply for an Express Visa, it will be processed within 24 hours, regardless of the day.

How Much is the Myanmar eVisa Fee?

The fees for a Myanmar eVisa are as follows:

  • Myanmar Tourist eVisa: USD 50
  • Myanmar Business eVisa: USD 70
  • Myanmar Express eVisa: USD 56

What Documents Do I Need for a Myanmar eVisa Application?

When you apply for a Myanmar eVisa, you have to upload scanned copies of the following documents:

  • Your passport, which has a validity of at least another six months before you depart Myanmar
  • A passport-size picture, with the following specifications:
    • Dimensions: 4.6 cm x 3.8 cm (1.8 inch x 1.5 inch)
    • Taken within the last three months
    • Has a plain, white background
    • You have a neutral facial expression and are facing forward
    • Your entire face is visible
    • You are not wearing any headgear or eyeglasses
  • For Myanmar Business eVisa:
    • A Letter of Invitation from the company in Myanmar.
    • The inviting company’s Company Registration.
    • If the inviting company is local: Their Certificate of Incorporation
    • If the inviting company is a foreign investment company: Their Certificate of Registration of Branch Office

What is the Duration of the Myanmar Visa?

Once they are issued, all Myanmar eVisas have to be used within three months, or they will expire. However, once you enter the country, the time you can spend there changes depending on the type of visa you have applied for:

  • Myanmar Tourist eVisa: 28 days
  • Myanmar Business eVisa: 70 days
  • Myanmar Express eVisa: 28 days

All Myanmar eVisas are issued for a single entry.

Can You Extend a Myanmar eVisa?

No, since the Myanmar eVisa is issued mainly for tourism purposes, you cannot extend it in order to stay in the country for longer than 28 days. However, you may be able to apply for an extension of a Business eVisa, if you make a request at the offices of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population in Myanmar.

Who is Exempt From Myanmar Visas Completely?

If you have an ordinary passport issued by one of the following countries and you are traveling for tourism purposes, you are exempt from a Myanmar visa for stays of up to 30 days:

  • Singapore (exempt from Myanmar visas for tourism and business purposes)
  • Hong Konga
  • Japan
  • Macao
  • South Korea

If you are a citizen of the following countries and you are traveling for tourism and business purposes, you are exempt from a Myanmar visa for  stays of up to 14 days:

  • Brunei
  • Cambodia
  • Indonesia
  • Laos
  • Philippines
  • Thailand (only if arriving by air)
  • Vietnam
