Can I Apply for a Taiwan eVisa if My Country Is Not on the Eligible List?

Yes, you can still  apply for a Taiwan eVisa if you meet the following criteria: 

• Taiwan invites you to attend an international conference, a sporting event, trade fairs or other organized events sponsored by the ROC (excluding Chinese citizens). 
• You are a part of a tourist group under the “Project for Simplifying Visa Regulations for High-end Group Tourists from South East Asian Countries” organized by one of the following countries:
  • India

  • Cambodia 
  • Laos 
• You are travelling to ROC to do business with the recommendation of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, and you are from one of the following countries:

Taiwan eVisa Requirements 

You usually need to have only a valid passport when you submit your eVisa application for Taiwan; your passport has to be valid for at least six months when you apply. 

However, depending on your purpose of travel and your nationality, a ROC mission overseas may ask you to submit additional documents- make sure you submit the required documents at the specified timeframe or your application will be rejected.

Taiwan eVisa Application Process

You can apply for a Taiwan eVisa by following the instructions listed below: 

1. Open a personal email account. 
2. Go to the official website of a ROC mission in your country. 
3. Fill in the online application form. 
4. Pay the application fee.
5. Print out the visa. 

Open an Email Account

If you don’t have an active email account, then you have to open one since you will receive all communications from the visa website in your email. However, if you do have an account, there is no need to open a new one as long as it’s active and you can access it with no issues. 

Go to the Offical Website of an Official ROC Mission in Your Country 

If you are from an eligible country for a Taiwan eVisa, then you can find the eVisa application link on the official website of a Taiwan mission in your country. If you are not from an eligible country, but you still meet the criteria for an eVisa, you can find the eVisa application form here.  

Fill In the Online Application Form 

Once you find the online application, you can start filling out the required information. First, make sure you select the correct visa (visitor, tourist, business, etc.), and then you can continue with the application. 

It’s essential to keep in mind that you must submit the same information that is in your travel document; if any details do not match, your application will be rejected. So, write your name and personal data precisely as it is your passport. 

Pay the Application Fee 

You have to pay the visa fee online before your application is processed. After you fill out your application, there will be a section for the payment; the ROC accepts only payment by credit card (Visa/MasterCard/ JCB), no other payment method is accepted. However, someone else can pay for your visa on your behalf. 

Print Out the Visa 

When your eVisa is approved, the visa system of the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) will send you an email with a link containing your eVisa. Download the eVisa and take the printout with you since you must present it at border patrol when you enter Taiwan.

Taiwan eVisa Cost

A Taiwan eVisa costs $57.68, but together with the processing fee of $1.60, the full payment is $59.28. However, if you are from the following countries, you do not have to pay an application fee for the eVisa: 

• Bosnia and Herzegovina
• Colombia 
• Kiribati 
• Kosovo 
• Mauritius 
• Montenegro 
• Panama 
• Peru 
• Solomon Islands 
• Turkey

Please keep in mind that the visa fee is non-refundable if your visa is rejected. Even if you do not use your visa after paying the application fee, the payment is still non-refundable. 

When Should I Apply for My Taiwan eVisa?

The ROC recommends that you apply for your electronic visa at least 7 days before you plan on travelling to Taiwan. 

How Long Is a Taiwan eVisa Valid For?

An electronic visa issued by Taiwan is valid for 30 days in three months. Therefore, you have 3 months from the issuance date to enter the country and use your visa. 

Can I Extend a Taiwan eVisa?

No, you cannot extend your Taiwan eVisa, this permit is issued for 30 days only and with a single entry- after your visa expires, if you want,  you can re-apply for another one. 

Can I Apply With Family Members?

No, you cannot submit a joint application with your family members. Every person who is accompanying you to Taiwan has to apply separately for their eVisa. 

Can I Apply for a Taiwan eVisa From the Philippines? 

Yes, you can still apply for an eVisa to Taiwan if you are from the Philippines. However, this agreement is valid up toJul 31, 2021; since its first trial year, the ROC has extended this option, and it may choose to remove the eVisa category for Filipinos in the future.

Who is eligible for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa?

You may only apply for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa if you comply with one of the following requirements:

• You have received venture capital investment or international fundraising that amounts to over NT$2 million.
• You have gotten patent rights or a professional skills certificate.
• You have been approved to reside in an incubator or recognized innovation park in Taiwan.
• You have been awarded in a leading startup or design competition or you took part in a foreigner entrepreneurship project.
• You are (or previously were) located in a startup accelerator recognized by Taiwan.
• Your company or the person who is the head of your company has been awarded or nominated in a film festival.
• You have received a government innovation subsidy of at least NT$3 million from the central government or NT$1 million from the local government.
• You have set up an enterprise with innovation capability in Taiwan and are acting as its legal representative, manager or director with an investment of at least NT$1 million.
• You possess the innovation capability as specified by the Taiwanese government.

Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa requirements

When you submit a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa application, you must have several supporting documents, such as:

• Completed Entrepreneur Visa Application Form, printed and signed.
• Two passport-size pictures, taken within the past six months. They must have a white background without any patterns. Dimensions must be 35mm by 45mm without a border.
• Your passport, valid for at least another six months and with at least three blank pages where the visa can be affixed.
• If you have received venture capital investment or international fundraising:
  • Investment commitment letter, or any other proof of investment, signed by you and the relevant venture capital firm
  • Registration documents of the venture capital firm, or any other documents proving the legality of such enterprise
  • Documents proving you have received the investment
• If you have patent rights or a professional skills certificate:
  • The patent certificate issued by the relevant Taiwan agency or an overseas agency
• If you are approved to reside in an incubator or recognized innovation park in Taiwan:
  • Proof of the collaboration agreement, signed by both involved parties
• If you were awarded in a leading startup or design competition or you took part in a foreigner entrepreneurship project:
  • Proof of the award certificate you received from the relevant agency
• If you set up an enterprise with an investment of at least NT$1 million:
  • The company’s registration documents and relevant permit
  • An investment authorization letter along with proof of the amount of investment.
• If you have been awarded or nominated in a film festival:
  • Proof of the Award of Excellence certificate
• Any other documents that are requested of you, related to your business or otherwise.

Keep in mind:

This is not an exhaustive list of requirements as the specific documents are to be decided on a case-to-case basis, depending on the nature of your startup. The Taiwan government has the right to request any other additional documents as they see fit.

How to Apply for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa?

There are two possible application methods for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa, depending on where you are:

• Abroad, at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission
• In Taiwan, at the Bureau of Consular Affairs or any of its offices

Applying from abroad

If you are currently abroad, you may submit the Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa application at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission, such as an embassy or consulate. The application process is as follows:

1. Complete the online Taiwan Visa Application Form (here). Print it and sign it.
2. Collect the required documents.
3. Submit the documents and application form at the Taiwanese diplomatic mission.
4. The mission’s staff will forward the application to the Taiwan Investment Commission to be reviewed.
5. The Investment Commission informs the diplomatic mission staff of the decision.
6. If positive, the Taiwanese diplomatic mission will issue your Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa.
7. Upon arrival in Taiwan, you have 15 days to apply for a residence permit at the National Immigration Agency.

Applying in Taiwan

If you have already entered Taiwan on a Visitor Visa may apply to turn it into a Resident Visa (Entrepreneur) from the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) or any of its offices 45 days before your current visa expires. The application process is as follows:

• Complete the online Taiwan Visa Application Form (here). Print it and sign it.
• Collect the required documents
• Submit the documents and application form at the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) or any of its offices.
• The BOCA will forward your application to the Investment Commission.
• The Investment Commission notifies the BOCA of their decision.
• If the decision is positive, the BOCA gives you your Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa.
• Within 15 days of receiving your visa, you have to apply for a residence permit at the National Immigration Agency.

Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa applications from Hong Kong and Macao residents

If you are a national of Hong Kong or Macao, you may apply for a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa in one of the two following ways:

• Inside Taiwan, through the National Immigration Agency
• From abroad, through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong or Macao

Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa processing time

If you are applying from inside Taiwan, the Entrepreneur Visa is typically processed within 2-3 weeks from the time you submit all the relevant documents. However, because applications that are submitted abroad still have to be forwarded to Taiwan for approval, the processing time for Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa applications submitted through a diplomatic mission will be longer.

Residence Permit for Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa

Although you need a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa to be allowed to start your business in Taiwan, if you want to be allowed to live in the country for longer than three months, you have to get a residence permit.

The Taiwanese residence permit is called the Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) and you have to apply for it at a local service center of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency.

What is the duration of a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa?

The first time you receive an Entrepreneur Visa for Taiwan, you will receive an Alien Resident Certificate with 1 years’ duration. After that first year is up, in which you have to set up your business, you may apply to extend your ARC, provided that you meet the extension criteria.

Extending a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa

After the initial first year is up, you can renew your Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa (technically, your Alien Resident Certificate) for another two times, each for a maximum of two years’ validity.

You may apply for an extension of your Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa if you fulfill one of the following conditions:

• In the previous year, your business amassed revenue of at least NT$3 million.
  • Or, if you are renewing for the second or third time, the average annual revenue from the last three years is at least NT$3 million.
• The operating expenses of your business for the last year (or the average annual expenses of the last three years) are at least NT$1 million.
• You have at least three full-time Taiwanese employees in your company.
• You are able to demonstrate that your company is positively contributing to Taiwan’s economic development in some other way.

If you fulfill any of those conditions, you may apply to renew your ARC at least 40 days before your current one expires at the National Immigration Agency.

Once you obtain five years of temporary residence in Taiwan, you are eligible for permanent residency: the Alien Permanent Resident Certificate (APRC). You can apply for the APRC if you’ve spent at least 183 days per year in Taiwan out of the last 5 years and if you can give proof of self-sufficiency.

Can I bring my family members with a Taiwan Entrepreneur Visa?

Yes, you can. The Entrepreneur Visa for Taiwan allows you to include your immediate family members (spouse and dependent children under 20 years of age) on your application, who will count as your dependents.

Foreign nationals who receive a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa, as the name suggests, are allowed to work during their stay, which may not exceed 1 year.

This article will detail the eligibility criteria, conditions, requirements, and application process of a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan.

Who is eligible for a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa?

You are eligible for a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan if you are a national of the following countries:

• Australia
• Austria
• Belgium
• Canada
• Czech Republic
• France
• Germany
• Hungary
• Ireland
• Japan
• Korea
• Luxembourg
• New Zealand
• Poland
• Slovakia
• The United Kingdom

In addition to your nationality, you must also fulfill certain other eligibility criteria, such as:

• You must be between 18 and 30 years of age at the time you submit your application
  • Exceptions:
    • For Canada, Slovakia, and Hungary nationals, the maximum age is 35
    • For nationals of the Czech Republic, the maximum age is 26
  • You must be living in your country of nationality at the time of application
  • You must never have received a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan previously

Conditions of the Working Holiday Taiwan Visa

If you receive a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan, you must adhere to certain conditions, including:

• You cannot work for the same employer for longer than 3 months
  • This does not apply if you are from Korea, Japan, Canada and the U.K.
  • If you are from Australia, you may work for the same employer for up to 6 months, but no longer.
• If you will work in technical or professional jobs, you must meet the adequate qualification and laws of registration for practice as required by the Taiwan government.
• You are not allowed to enroll in full-time formal courses in any Taiwanese educational institution. You are only allowed to enroll in Chinese language courses, and even then, the study period must not be longer than 3 months.
• You will not be allowed to bring any dependents with you to Taiwan.
• You will not be eligible for National Health Insurance, unless you are from the UK.
• You cannot apply to turn the Working Holiday Visa into another type of Taiwan visa.

What are the requirements of a Taiwan Working Holiday Visa?

When applying for a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan, you must have several supporting documents such as:

• The Working Holiday Taiwan Visa Application Form.
• Your passport, which must be valid for at least another year
• Two recent pictures of yourself, which:
  • Are 2-inch x 2-inch
  • Are taken within the last 6 months
• Proof of a roundtrip flight ticket, or alternatively, proof you have the financial means to buy it.
• Proof of sufficient financial means to cover at least the initial period of your stay. You must have at least NT$ 100,000 (or its equivalent in your country’s currency)
• Proof of health insurance covering the entire duration of your stay in Taiwan.
• If you are from Australia or Canada: Health Certificate issued by a doctor in your country.
• An outline of your planned stay in Taiwan. You must be able to prove your main purpose is not to work but rather holidays.
• Any additional documents that the Taiwanese diplomatic missions may require you to submit.

How to Apply for a Taiwan Working Holiday Visa?

You have to apply for a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission in your country. The application process for a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan is as follows:

1. Collect the required documents.
2. Submit them at the Taiwanese diplomatic mission in your country.
3. Pay the visa fee.
4. Wait for the visa to be processed. You may also be asked to enter a visa interview.
5. If your visa is approved, you must collect your passport with the visa affixed to it.
6. You may enter the country within one year of issuance of the visa (three months for UK nationals).
7. If you are from the UK: Apply for a residence permit within 15 days of entering.

Exceptions:

Canadian citizens may also apply for a Working Holiday Visa even from inside Taiwan.

What are the Working Holiday Taiwan Visa Fees?

What is the Validity of a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa?

The Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan is issued for a maximum of 180 days (six months) and it is a multiple-entry Taiwan Visitor Visa. Before your visa expires, you must apply to renew it for another 180 days.  This makes the overall time you can spend in Taiwan on a Working Holiday Visa a maximum of 12 months.

Exception: Nationals of the UK will receive a single-entry visa valid for up to three months, and will have to obtain a residence permit within 15 days of arrival.

Extending a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa

You must apply to extend your 180-day multiple-entry Working Holiday Visa at least 15 days before it expires at a local office of the National Immigration Agency in Taiwan. You may extend your visa for another 180 days maximum.

If you are from the UK, your residence permit valid will be valid for up to one year, which means it cannot be extended.

Once you have spent 12 months in Taiwan, you are not allowed to apply for another extension.

Do You Need a Residence Permit for a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa?

Unless you are from the UK, once you arrive in Taiwan with a Working Holiday Visa, you do not have to apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC). Your visa will be valid for six months, after which you may apply to extend it.

If you are from the UK, after you enter Taiwan with your Working Holiday Taiwan Visa, you must apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) from the National Immigration Agency within 15 days. The ARC will be valid for one year and non-extendable.

Do you need a work permit for a Working Holiday Taiwan Visa?

No, you do not. If you receive a Working Holiday Visa for Taiwan, you do not have to apply for a separate work permit before or afterward as you would for a Taiwan Work Visa. The Working Holiday Visa automatically allows you to take up work and is regarded as a work permit.

You are eligible to apply for a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa (JFRV) if you fall under one of the following categories:

• You are the foreign spouse of a Taiwan citizen
• You are the child or grandchild under 20 years of age of a Taiwan citizen

If you are the spouse or dependent of a foreigner who is in Taiwan with a work permit (ie. not a Taiwan citizen), you can also apply for a Resident Visa to join them but there are different rules you have to follow once there.

Requirements for a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa

When you apply for a Taiwan Family Visa, you must have several documents to support your application, such as:

• Completed Taiwan Resident Visa Online Application Form, completed and signed.
• Your passport, valid for at least another six months and with at least three blank pages where the visa can be affixed.
• A photocopy of your passport’s personal information page showing your picture.
• Two passport-sized pictures, taken within the last six months.
• Payment of the Taiwan Visa fee
• Health Certificate, issued in the past three months by a hospital in your country or a hospital authorized by the Centers for Disease Control of Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare (the original and a photocopy)
  • If your Health Certificate is issued by a hospital in your country, you must legalize the document at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission before you submit it.
  • Children under six years of age are exempt from having a Health Certificate
• Certificate of Police Clearance issued by the competent police authorities in your country in the past year.
• For spouses: Marriage registration or a marriage certificate (the original and a photocopy).
• If your family member has Taiwan Household Registration: Household Registration Certificate showing marriage registration, your name in your native language and your nationality (the original and a photocopy).
• If your family member does not have Taiwan Household Registration: Their Alien Residence Certificate or Alien Permanent Residence Certificate, which must be valid for at least another six months (the original and a photocopy)
• For children under 20 joining a parent:
  • Birth certificate showing the parents’ names (original and a photocopy)
  • Proof of their parent’s marriage (original document and a photocopy)
  • Proof of their parent’s Household Registration, if the parents are Taiwan citizens (original and a photocopy)
  • If the parents are divorced: Proof of custody (original and photocopy)
• For children under 20 joining a grandparent:
  • Permission from the parents or legal guardians, allowing the minor to travel.

Note:

This is not an exhaustive list of requirements. The Taiwanese authorities handling your application may request any additional documents depending on your case.

All the documents you submit have to be either in Chinese or English. If they are not, they must be translated and both the original and the translation have to be submitted.

Translations of documents have to be authenticated by a Taiwanese diplomatic mission overseas before you submit them.

How to Apply for a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa?

There are two ways through which you can apply for a Taiwan Family Visa:

• Abroad at a Taiwan diplomatic mission
• In Taiwan, at the Bureau of Consular Affairs

Applying for a Taiwan Family Visa abroad

You may apply for your Join Family Resident Visa before you travel to Taiwan from a Taiwanese diplomatic mission (such as an embassy or consulate). The application process is as follows:

• Complete the online Taiwan Resident Visa Application here. Print it and sign it.
• Collect the required documents (see “Requirements” below).
• Submit the application and the documents at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission.
  • You choose which Taiwanese diplomatic mission you will submit your application when you complete the online application form.
  • You may apply at any diplomatic mission or representative office, but it is recommended you apply at the one in your country (or the nearest, if there’s no Taiwan representation in your country).
• Pay the Taiwan visa fee.
• You may also be asked to enter an interview.
• If the Taiwan diplomatic mission staff consider that your application needs further review, they will forward it to the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Taiwan.
• Wait for the visa to be processed.
• If your visa application is approved, you have three months to enter Taiwan.
• Within 15 days of entering the country, you must apply for a residence permit at the National Immigration Agency.

Applying for a Taiwan Family Visa in Taiwan

If you have already entered Taiwan on a Visitor Visa, you can apply to turn it into a Resident Visa without leaving the country. You must apply for your visa at the Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) at least eight days before your Taiwan Visitor Visa is set to expire.

Once the BOCA issues your Resident Visa, you must apply for a residence permit at the National Immigration Agency within 15 days.

Residence Permit for Taiwan Family Visa

Every foreign national who wishes to stay in Taiwan long-term has to obtain a residence permit, which is known as an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), from a local service center of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency.

It is the ARC which allows the holder to remain in the country for longer than three months. An ARC can be issued for one, two, or three years and it is renewable. You must renew your ARC at least thirty days before it expires.

Once a foreigner has lived in Taiwan with an ARC for at least five years consistently, they may be eligible to get a Taiwan Alien Permanent Resident Certificate (APRC). You can apply for the APRC if you’ve spent at least 183 days per year in Taiwan out of the last 5 years and if you can give proof of self-sufficiency.

What is the Validity of a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa?

As all Resident Visas, a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa is valid for a maximum of three months on its own. This is why you have to obtain an Alien Resident Certificate, which is what actually allows you to legally live in Taiwan for an extended amount of time.

Additionally, a Resident Visa only allows the holder to enter Taiwan once, whereas the ARC also works as a re-entry permit, allowing you multiple entries into the country.

Can you Work With a Taiwan Join Family Resident Visa?

Yes, you can, but the rules change depending on the nationality of your family member.

If you are married to a Taiwanese citizen and you receive a Join Family Resident Visa along with an ARC, you do not need a separate work permit to be allowed to work in Taiwan. Your Resident Visa and ARC automatically allow you to work.

However, if you are the foreign spouse or dependent of an ARC/Resident Visa holder, you must obtain your own Work Permit to be allowed to work in Taiwan.

The acceptable method of payment depends on the location through which you submit your Taiwan visa application. Does Taiwan Have a Digital Nomad Visa?

Taiwan does not have a visa designed especially for digital nomads; however, they do have The Taiwan Employment Gold Card, which applies to digital nomads.

The Taiwan Employment Gold Card is a combined open work permit, residence permit, and visa for skilled professionals and has been active since February 2018. With the Gold Card, you can stay in Taiwan for one to three years. Moreover, having this card entitles you to work for any (or multiple) Taiwanese companies or to start your own enterprise.

Who is Eligible for a Taiwan (Gold Card) Digital Nomad Visa?

The Gold Card applies to professionals, freelancers, or self-employed individuals who can prove that they have a $5,700 monthly income.

Individuals with high-skilled professions in one of the eight fields are also eligible for a Taiwan (Gold Card) digital nomad visa.

How to Apply for a Taiwan (Gold Card) Digital Nomad Visa?

You must apply for a Taiwan (Gold Card) digital nomad visa online through the official Taiwan Employment Gold Card website. The application process is as follows:

1. Prepare the required documents. You must have digital copies of the documents, so you can upload them to the online platform. The documents you need are in the section “Requirements for Taiwan (Gold Card) Digital Nomad Visa”.
2. Register in the online application. Go to the Foreign Professionals Online Application Platform website and create an account. Remember, you need to change your password every three months.
3. Access the online application form. The link to the application form can be found here. Fill it out with information and make sure your name is the same as the one on your passport. You can save the added information and come back to it at any time.
4. Upload the documents. Make sure to add the additional documents for your profession as well. You must submit documents that comply with the requirements for the qualification you are applying for. Note: Hong Kong and Macau residents may be required to provide proof of residence and identity.
5. Pay the fees. After submitting the online application, the system will email you a 12-digit application number. Then log into your account and enter the “online payment” tab. How to Apply for a Taiwan Work Permit?

It is your employer who has to get a Taiwan work permit for you. They can apply for your work permit in one of the two following ways:

• Online, through the website of the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) of the Ministry of Labor; or
• By submitting the application at the reception counter of the Workforce Development Agency of the Ministry of Labor (either in person or by registered mail)

Once your employer obtains a Taiwan work permit on your behalf, then depending on your situation, you may:

What are the Requirements for a Taiwan Work Visa?

When submitting a Taiwan work visa application, you must have the following documents:

• Completed Work Visa Application Form, printed and signed.
• Two passport-size pictures, taken within the past six months. They must have a white background without any patterns. Dimensions must be 35mm by 45mm without a border.
• Your passport, valid for at least another six months and with at least three blank pages where the visa can be affixed.
• Health Certificate issued in the past three months (original and photocopy). Before you apply for a Taiwan work visa, you must get a Health Certificate by a hospital appointed by the Centers for Disease Control of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan or a hospital in your home country. If you receive a health certificate from a non-Taiwanese hospital, you must have it legalized by a Taiwanese diplomatic mission.
• The Taiwan Work Permit (original and photocopy) which is valid for at least six more months.
• Any additional documents based on your profession.

  • The diplomatic mission staff could also request an interview, if they think it is necessary
  • If they think your application requires additional examination, they will forward it to the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Taiwan, who will notify them of what decision to make.

Applying for a work visa once you’re already in Taiwan

If you are already in Taiwan with a Visitor Visa for employment purposes (such as business, investment, employment-seeking), you do not have to leave the country to apply for a Resident Visa. You can apply to turn your Visitor Visa into a Resident Work Visa at the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Taiwan.

You must apply for the Taiwan Resident (Work) Visa after your employer obtains your work permit, and at least 8 days before your Visitor Visa expires.

Once the BOCA issues your work visa, you must apply for a Taiwan residence permit at a local service center of the National Immigration Agency within 15 days.

Taiwan Residence Permit for Foreign Workers

Even though the Taiwan work permit allows you to work and the work visa allows you entry into the country, you cannot stay in Taiwan longer than 90 days unless you have a valid residence permit. The residence permit for Taiwan is called an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) and must be obtained from a local service center of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency.

The ARC can be issued for one, two, or three years and is renewable.

How Long is a Taiwan Work Visa Valid For?

The work visa itself is valid for a maximum of three months. However, if you intend to work for longer than that, you must get an ARC that is issued for one, two, or three years.

Can you Extend a Taiwan Work Visa?

What are the Types of Taiwan Student Visas?

The Taiwan student visa is a type of Resident Visas (the type of visa issued for long-term stays). The types of Taiwan student visa offered are:

• Taiwan student visa for full-time foreign students (PhD, MA, BA, high school or below)
• Taiwan student visa for international exchange students

You may apply for a Taiwan student visa after you arrive in Taiwan only if you have received a Taiwan Visitor Visa for studying purposes. If you are in Taiwan simply for tourism or visiting purposes, you won’t be able to get a student visa once you arrive in the country.

If you do meet the criteria to apply for a Taiwan student visa at the BOCA, you must do so at least 8 workdays before your current visa expires.

If your visa application is approved, you must apply for a Taiwan residence permit at a local service center of the National Immigration Agency within 15 days.

*Applying as a student of Mandarin Chinese

If you want to study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan, you must first enter the country with a Visitor Visa with the purpose of studying Chinese. After you finish four months of studies, you may apply to turn your Visitor Visa into a Resident (student) visa at the Bureau of Consular Affairs. You have to apply at least 8 days before your current Visitor Visa expires.

After getting the Taiwan student visa, you must apply for a Taiwan residence permit as well.

Residence Permit for Taiwan Student Visa

Once you receive a Taiwan student visa, the next step is to get a Taiwan residence permit. It is the residence permit, known as an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), that allows you to remain in the country long-term, not the student visa itself. To get a Taiwan ARC, you must apply at a local service center of the National Immigration Agency within 15 days of arriving in Taiwan :

• Complete an online application, which is available on the website of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency
• Print the application form and take it to an office of the National Immigration Agency along with the following documents:
  • Your passport, with the Taiwan student visa (Resident Visa), affixed
  • Your Student ID Card or a Certificate of Enrollment at your educational institution
  • A recent colored picture of yourself (2-inch x 2-inch)
  • Payment for the ARC fee

The application process for a Taiwan tourist visa is divided into two parts:

• Submitting the documents. After you print the online Taiwan Visa Application Form, you must collect the required documents for your specific visa and submit them along with the application form at a Taiwanese diplomatic mission.

How Long Can Does it Take to Get a Tourist Visa for Taiwan?

The time it takes to process a Taiwan tourist visa depends on the specific diplomatic mission where you are applying from. However, in most cases, it takes somewhere between 2 to 5 working days to process a visa, starting from the time they receive your completed application.

The processing time may be affected by any mission documents or whether the diplomatic mission has to refer your application to the Bureau of Consular Affairs for approval.

How Long Can I Stay in Taiwan With a Tourist Visa?

A Taiwan Tourist Visa allows the holder to stay in Taiwan for a maximum of 90 days from the day of arrival. Some countries have a shorter allowed time of stays such as 14, 30, or 60 days. The visa for Taiwan is valid for:

• Up to three months, if you have a single-entry Taiwan visa
• Up to five years, if you have a multiple-entry Taiwan visa

Can you extend a Taiwan Tourist Visa?

Yes, you can. You can extend a Taiwan tourist visa at a local office of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency before your current visa expires if you have a valid reason.

However, if your visa has a stamp that states “No Extension Will Be Granted”, you first have to apply to get your non-extendable visa changed to an extendable one from the Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA).

What is the Taiwan Tourist Visa fee?

Taiwan Tourist Visa fees are as follows:

Taiwan eVisa

The eVisa for Taiwan is a type of Tourist/Visitor visa which is available only to nationals of certain countries (listed below).

If you are eligible for an eVisa, you do not have to go to any Taiwanese diplomatic mission – the entire application process takes place online. You may apply here, and after it is processed, you will receive your eVisa via email. Then, you must print it and show it to the immigration officers after you travel.

Nationals of the following countries can apply for a Taiwan eVisa (for any purpose):

Taiwan Landing Visa (Visa On Arrival)

The Taiwan Landing Visa is issued after the foreigner arrives in Taiwan. However, it is only available to:

• Turkish citizens
• Holders of emergency or temporary passports issued by a visa-exempt country

If you are eligible for a Taiwan Landing Visa, you can receive it after you arrive at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Other eligible points of entry are:

Taiwan Visitor Visa Requirements for Specific Countries

If you are from one of the countries mentioned in the table below, you cannot get a Taiwan Visitor Visa unless you fulfill one of these requirements:

• You have been invited by a Taiwan government agency on official business
• You will be partaking in an international activity or meeting for religious, athletic, or cultural exchange purposes which is organized by a Taiwanese organization
• You will visit a family member who is a legal resident in Taiwan, such as a spouse, a family member of lineal relationship, or a sibling.
• You will conduct economic or commercial businesses (for which you will need a Letter of Guarantee from your contact in Taiwan)
• You are a crew member and will come to Taiwan to report for duty
• You will come to Taiwan for medical treatment

You may apply for a Taiwan Visitor Visa at one of the following locations:

• Nepal: the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in New Delhi
• India: the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in New Delhi
• Nigeria: the Taipei Trade Office in the Federal Republic of Nigeria
• Ghana: the Taipei Trade Office in the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Exceptions: If you are from Bhutan or Sri Lanka, you can also apply for a Taiwan tourist visa and you don’t have to submit a Letter of Guarantee when applying for a business visa.

Entry Requirements to Taiwan for Citizens of the PRC, Hong Kong, and Macau

If you are from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Macau or Hong Kong, you cannot apply for a Taiwan Tourist Visa. Instead, you need an Exit and Entry Permit, which can be issued in one of two ways:

• Single-entry Exit and Entry Permit, issued on an A4 paper.
• Multiple-entry Exit and Entry Permit, which is on the form of a passport-size booklet.

If you are from Hong Kong and Macau, you need an Entry and Exit Permit if you have one of the following travel documents:

• Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport (HKSAR)
• British National (Overseas) passport (BN(O))
• Macao Special Administrative Region passport (MSAR)

If you have another nationality or are living in another country, you don’t have to get an Entry and Exit Permit since you are not considered as a resident. Instead, you will be subject to the visa requirements of your second country of nationality.

If you are from the People’s Republic of China, you have to get an Entry and Exit Permit but you are also subject to a daily quota of visitors to Taiwan (14,600 persons per day, where half of the quota should go to individual tour applicants). If you have obtained another nationality, you must follow the Taiwan visa requirements of your current nationality. Even so, as a former PRC citizen, you may still face some restrictions when you travel to Taiwan, such as:

• You may still have to get a visa because you were born in China, even if you’re currently a national of a visa-exempt country

Taiwan Visa Application Process

You have to apply for a Taiwan visa in person at a Taiwan diplomatic mission abroad, preferably in your country. However, before appearing at the Taiwanese diplomatic mission, you have to complete and print an online Taiwan Visa Application Form. The Taiwan visa application process is as follows:

• Complete, print and sign the electronic Taiwan Visa Application Form
• Collect the required documents for a Taiwan visa
• Submit the application and the required documents at a Taiwan diplomatic mission

Complete the Taiwan Visa Application From

The first part of a Taiwan visa application is completing the visa application form, which the Taiwan government has made accessible online. You can access the Taiwan Visa Application Form through this website. The fields you must complete include:

• Your personal details, such as your name, nationality, gender, birth date and place, marital status, details of your spouse (if any), employment status, address, contact details, etc.
• The details of your passport, such as issue/expiry date, type of passport, and passport number.
• The type of visa you want
• Selecting the Taiwanese diplomatic mission where you will submit the visa application to from a dropdown menu.
• Details regarding the purpose of your travel
• Contact information of your host/contact in Taiwan
• Stating whether you are submitting an application on someone else’s behalf.

After starting an application, you can select “Save Draft” and exit the application to complete it at another time. If you remain on one section of the application form for longer than 30 minutes without saving, you will lose that section and have to restart.

Once you complete the Taiwan visa application form, you have to print it and sign it. You can have someone else complete the application on your behalf, but the application form must have your signature.

Collect the required documents

When you submit a Taiwan visa application, you must have several supporting documents, such as:

• Your passport or another travel document, valid for at least six more months from the date of entry to Taiwan.

• A return/onward travel ticket, which proves you intend to leave after your stay in Taiwan is over.

What are the Taiwan Visa Requirements?

The Taiwan visa requirements include:

Taiwan Visa Application Form

The Taiwan visa requirement is completing the application form. You must complete the form online, print it, sign it and submit it to the Taiwan diplomatic representation (see document submission requirements below) along with the other documents.

Passport

You have to submit your original passport, which should be valid for at least another six months starting from the time you enter Taiwan. The passport must also have at least three blank pages which the Taiwanese authorities will use to affix your visa and the entry and exit stamps.

You may also be required to submit photocopies of the relevant pages on your passport, such as your personal information, issue, and expiry date, and previous visas.

Some diplomatic missions may also ask for previous visas if you had any.

Pictures

Along with your application, you should submit two recent pictures of yourself, taken within the last six months, which follow these specifications:

• Dimensions: 35mm by 45mm without a border
• Your face must take up 70% – 80% of the picture. Must include the tops of your shoulders.
• Colored picture, printed on high-quality photo paper
• White background without any patterns
• Your expression:
  • You must have a neutral facial expression, with the mouth closed
  • You must stare ahead, with a straight head position (not tilted)
  • Your eyes must be fully open and visible
• Your attire:
  • No white tops
  • No flashy jewelry
  • No headgear, unless it is for religious purposes. Even so, it cannot obstruct your face at all.
  • Eyeglasses are not recommended. However, if you must wear them make sure they do not cover your face or eyes at any capacity. No tinted glasses!
• The picture must be high quality, without any blurriness, over- or under-exposure, or glare.

Travel itinerary/travel ticket

As part of the Taiwan visa requirements, you should include a confirmed flight ticket showing the dates of entry and departure from Taiwan.

Proof of accommodation in Taiwan

You must give proof of where you intend to stay while you are in Taiwan. This could be a confirmed hotel reservation, a letter from your host (if you are visiting someone), or another type of tourist accommodation.

Proof of sufficient financial means

Part of the Taiwan visa requirements is also being able to prove you can financially support yourself while you stay there.

You must submit original bank statements from the last six months, bearing the bank’s stamp and showing adequate balance.

Employment status documents

Depending on your status of employment, you have to submit:

• A letter from your employer confirming your employment, signed and sealed. You may also be required to submit recent payslips.
• A letter from your school, if you are a student, confirming your enrollment and a school ID card.
• Documents proving you are self-employed.

Taiwan visa fee

All visa applicants have to pay a Taiwan visa fee. However, the method of payment changes depending on the specific Taiwanese diplomatic mission. Some may require payment by bank while others only accept visa fee payment in exact cash.

Specific requirements for minors

Minors (under 18 years of age), should also submit their original birth certificate. The parent/s or legal guardian/s have to sign the Taiwan visa application form on their behalf.

If the minor is traveling alone, they also need a letter of authorization from both parents or legal guardians allowing the minor to travel, along with copies of their IDs.

Where do I Submit the Taiwan Visa Required Documents?
